Yellow 10"x4" F1 car
A custom Formula One model in the lovely shade of generic yellow.
About this creation
Ever since I purchased the Lego Racers set "8496 Desert Hammer", I've wanted to use those awesome looking gray wheels and flat tires on a Formula One MOC. So, using pieces from "5767 Cool Cruiser" and parts from my own collection, I've created a generic yellow Formula One race car. It measures at almost exactly 10 inches long and 4 inches wide, or 31 studs long and 13 studs wide if you measure the span of the wheels and front wing (the main body is only 12 studs wide).

^ The shape of the car is loosely based on the modern F1 racers we've seen since 2009. This car has somewhat of a tall rear wing, and the front wing spans the width of the wheels. However, the sidepods are larger than what any real F1 car would have today.

^ I really like this angle. Note how the nose cone is only 3 studs wide. This was a tricky design feature to pull off, but 2-wide would have been a bit narrow, and 4-wide would have been too wide.

^ From this angle you can see the brake light and the 7 stud wide rear wing. I tried some diffuser designs, but I didn't like the way any of them looked. Not sure if I regret leaving this idea out or not.

^ Here's a shot of the model from the side. It rides very close to the ground, and most of the monocoque sits slightly below the tops of the tires. This car would be perfect on a circuit with no elevation changes whatsoever. We'll miss you, Spa.

^ Overhead view. Note the mock suspension and struts around the axles.

^ All in all, I think the car turned out looking pretty nice. My first attempt was really unstable, sort of odd looking, and didn't have as much SNOT. The final model you see here is surprisingly sturdy, and it took a lot of refining to get it that way. The 3 stud wide nose cone attaches securely to the 12 stud wide body via some technic beams inside the car. The first version of the car had a tendency to break in half due to poorly executed integration of these techinc parts. The previously mentioned 2-wide and 4-wide nose cone options would have been much easier to do, but I just thought 3-wide looked best, and I'm glad I forced myself to make it happen. The 7 stud wide rear wing was easier -- I attached it with 6 of those 1x2 plates that have a single stud on top, and it works pretty well. The rear wing never falls off or anything.

Anyway, this is not a super-heavily detailed model, but it was really designed to be a generic, slightly stylized representation of a modern Formula One car. Let me know what you think in the comments, as this is my first MOCpages submission. Thanks for viewing!

I appreciate the comment! It took a bit of work to secure those pieces firmly on the sides, but it was definitely worth it.

Thank you! I originally made this model exclusively from the "Cool Cruiser" parts, but I couldn't resist the urge to modify it into exactly what I wanted. I'll give your MOCs a look =]
