I've really been getting back into the whole CS (Classic Space) theme recently. So when I had the idea for a transforming mecha I thought, why not add it to that theme.
My original plan was actually an AEGAKS unit but I'll come back to that idea later.
The "transformation" is quite basic and in some ways resembles G1 Optimus Prime.
I wanted an easy access cockpit system, with the twin hatches and the relatively low stance for the "Rover" mode, getting a pilot in and out is no problem. (note if you do download the LDD file, my laptop started having problems with the clearance for the hatch despite me making doubly sure there was plenty of room when I designed the hinge, so don't be surprised if some fiddling is required).
I also wanted a "look" that said "classic space". I think the boxy blue cockpit with the dominantly grey mechanism, coupled with the yellow and black stripes and the odd trans-pieces carry off the style well. The greebling on the back is more a joke than a serious attempt to any kind of specific function.
I wanted to create a new hinge system that didn't look like my CyberAgent designs, I think I managed it with the elbows. The leg design however is a little bland by comparison.
Transformation is very simple and the arms are still visible. If you take them to be ore sample collectors that isn't a big issue.
Foot design is a little spindly, could use a heel.
Legs aren't very poseable, tends to have a wide legged stance or a to attention stance. Foot joint is positioned incorrectly for an ankle turn and there is no thigh swivel.
Didn't design any extra equipment for him to hold.
I'm planning on revisiting the idea, but as my "cons" list suggests I have a few issues with the design I want to try and fix.
1. The legs. While I love the look in Rover mode, I think they lack detail in Hard-suit mode, so I'm going to look at a different way of pulling off the same basic conversion. I've got lots of ideas and I've seen some designs for Transformers (namely Optimus Prime) that might work.
2. The chest looks a little plain, I know that was my original goal, but it just doesn't feel like a "andros" design. Needs more "cowbell" as they say on TFLive. Don't ask.
3. I need to completely rethink the feet, they really wouldn't give much support to such a heavy torso, they need to be wider with a heal spur and they need to be more central.
4. Tools!! Classic Space didn't feature weapons, but he has to have some sort of function, right? Maybe I can partly convert that backpack into a tool rack....
I'm currently ok with the arm design, but it depends how the leg redesign works out as to whether I'd change them too, depending on how they turn out, he might need longer biceps and forearm to get something closer to human proportions.
Great fun and very playable. I agree that the toes look a bit small to support the mech. As for finding a function: well with those arms it can already do all sort of jobs. Your in-depth knowledge of all of the different ways of building hinges in Lego really lets you build some great designs!

Despite what you say about it, this is still pretty awesome! I like how in Rover mode it has what looks to be a small shovel on the front.
I always try to comment on my stuff as if I was seeing it for the first time, and sometimes there are ideas I have once I upload something which just didn't occur to me at the time.
The little shovel is deliberate well spotted. :D
