PA 320
A modern third generation main battle tank.
About this creation
Here's something different from me. I always liked Russian T-72 and I've been looking through a lot of very good tank MOCs recently, so that inspired me to try and build my own tank. My main inspiration was Nathan Elkins' excellent T-64, from which I borrowed some ideas. I hope you don't mind Nathan.
Not everything went smoothly though. I've rebuilt it from scratch about three or four times. I guess anyone who ever tried connecting treads to wheels in LDD knows how demanding and tiresome that can be. All I will say is that I never want to do it again and if I ever build something like this again I'll just rework this MOC.

Here it is - the suspension. At first I wanted to make a Christie suspension, but decided to go with torsion bar kind of a suspension instead.

One of the goals I set for myself was to be able to place three crew members and an engine inside of the tank. I managed to achieve that but not without certain drawbacks. As you can see crew members are practically lying down, and in real life it would be very hard to place them inside. Sadly, there was no room for ammo storage so that's imaginary then. :-)

Here's the driver's point of view...

... and here is the inside of the turret. Note the radio and the binoculars.

The engine access and...

... the engine itself. It's a double engine in fact, the V8 diesel plus a gas turbine, much like the one in french AMX-56 Leclerc on which it was based. So, it has advantages of both kinds of engines, and it can use multiple oil types.

One thing I've noticed about every other LEGO tank is that they don't have gun depression. Just elevation. I think I found sort of a solution to that problem.

So now we have gun elevation AND gun depression. I have no idea how it would work in real life though...

Next is the snorkel (Nathan Elkins' idea) which you can see strapped to the back of the tank here...

... and deployed here. Tank is ready to cross the river now without fear of drowning the crew.

And here is the back view of fully equipped PA 320. We have spare wheels, spare links for the treads, two jerry cans, a large box for whatever the crew might need to carry and an oil can. I am really proud on how I managed to squeeze the spare links for treads there. Also, note the wooden log placed beneath the auxiliary tanks - that's for when you get stuck in mud or something similar.

Next are some photoshoped images, nothing special...

Firing on the move...

:gasp: Flying tanks!

And a mandatory desert camo.

Speaking of camo, here is some bush camo for this thing.

Because a 50-ton diesel powered, high-speed moving bush is as inconspicuous as an elephant in the glass store...
It is included in the LDD file, although you are guaranteed to have some problems mounting it.

If anyone was wondering about performances and technical data here it is:

Weight: 49 tonnes
Crew: 3 (commander, driver, gunner)
Armor: Non-explosive reactive armor
Main armament: 125 mm smoothbore gun with guided missile capability
Secondary armament: Turret mounted heavy machine-gun
Engine: V8 diesel + gas turbine for output of ~1400 hp
Power/weight ratio: 28.6 hp/tonne
Suspension: Torsion bar
Operational range: 600 km (850 km with auxiliary tanks)
Speed: 70 km/h on road, 50 km/h off-road

That's all folks! Rates, comments, suggestions are welcome, and if you are using it please post a link to this page. Thank you!

Yes, for some reason I thought it was more of a solid piece than a flex one - the disadvantages of LDD... Thanks a lot for the comment, though! :-)

That U-joint would just wobble about, but its a nice thought. The rest is stellar, mind you. Great sloping and armor. Nice suspension as well! Very spiffy indeed

Quoting Oscar Kent How do I download this for LDD, when I click it it pops up random letters. I have a mac.
Honestly, I don't know. On WinXP it works fine. I found this on "Mac OSX 10.4 is no longer supported. The minimum system requirement is Mac OSX 10.6.8 or higher." I hope that helps somehow.

And with the crew having to lie down, that's just a side effect of the low profile of the tank, all armoured eastern bloc vehicles are like that. Just ask my father, he will tell you something about them.

Great, i'll post what I have so far. I fixed the nose, it just needs weapons and landing gear.

Also, my MiG-29 is almost done, maybe I can post it tonight, so could you check that out?

How do I put this into a LDD creation? It just pops up jibberish.

Ah ok. I can definitely see the Eastern-bloc influence on this tank. Looks like it would be a very good combat machine in real life though.

Quoting Tomas Crncevic Excellent work! You should try remaking this into an M-84!
Thank you, although gun needs reworking as Locutus mentioned. It is partially inspired by M-84 actually.

Oh well - I tried. At least it's easy to replace with something more suitable. Thanks for the comment! :-)

Nice one! But i think, with real bricks, your gun elevation wont work. ;)
