When I got 60007, I thought the 4x4looked pretty good and the sports car was a bit odd but after building, it was more the other way round. The car is great but the 4x4 looked a bit stripped back, maybe to help the set hit the price point, so I decided to use my own bricks to 'pump it up' a bit.
About this creation
The result is a much beefier model with plenty of details. I didn't want it to look too different, just be fuller and look more the part.
The first modification was capacity. I don't like the way most 6-wide vehicles pretend to seat two minifigures but don't, so I put that right first. The bonnet top air duct was a late addition to give it that extra 4x4 feel (fitted to the passenger side as my vehicles are built right-hand-drive).
Part of accommodating this included doors and wing mirrors. Not the sturdiest you'll see but they passed the '2-year-old play test'.
The front end came next and although it just looks like a few extra details, I had to completely rebuild it to make it work.
Finally, the rear. It took a while to get a design I was happy with but in the end, I think I like it more than the front. The hardest part was keeping the colour scheme as I've just found out how many white brinks I don't have.
A little extra that came out of the building process was this rail. I had to make it stick forward a bit but now, a minifigure can hang on to either side. Great for getting extra officers to the scene.
