Santa Maria del Naranco is a IX century small church located in the North of Spain. It was originally a royal palace, but it was turned into a church some time after it was finished in 848 AC. Santa Maria is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List .
In the first floor a room is believed to hold a bath. Not like the one you and I have at home, but more like the ones built in Roman villas. Spain was ruled by the Roman empire for many centuries, so these guys probably copied the idea. I do not blame them!
This is the biggest room in the first floor. It had to be very dark, but for fun I put some tables for people to eat. The original floors have been lost so it is hard to say what it looked like. Many monuments of this time were actually quite colorful, so I took my own guess.
There is another room opposite to the baths. Lets say it was for the horses.
The main floor is the second one. This is probably were the King would have parties and such. This was a small kingdom. In fact, the Iberian peninsula at the time was under Arab control and this palace was as much as the Christian King could afford. Nothing compared to the incredible palaces built around the same time in southern Spain by the Arabs, but still cute.
Here is a detail of a table that was added way after the palace was originally built.
The princess claims that there she received a visit despite having closed all doors and windows. I wonder if someone has built a secret entrance to the palace? I hope you can tell where it is...
I built this so you can easily play with each of the levels. It kind of works, although it proved challenging when it came time to take pictures. I will reconsider for the next project. Taking pictures is part of the fun, so the design should account for it.
