This is my entry into the Sidekick division of Mr. Xenomurphy's 2013 Superhero contest. I chose the second build option, to depict a villain's trap for a hero. This is my depiction of an iconic trap from the Scott Snyder graphic novel Batman: The Black Mirror. The setting: The exclusive organization Mirror House, led by The Dealer, holds secret meetings at landmarks of evil in order to auction off supervillain artifacts, which they treat with an almost religious respect. The current Batman, Dick Grayson, is attending a meeting in disguise as one of the members, William Rhodes. It's a trap. I will let the images and the Dealer's monologue tell the story.
About this creation
Mr. Rhodes! You're just in time! We're about to begin! Benjamin, the door please...
Welcome all! Welcome, welcome, welcome!
What a night we have in store! First, to all you old friends of Mirror House, welcome back...
And to our new friends, warmest salutations and entree.
So how about this location?
Wonderful, isn't it?
Wonderful space, wonderful friends, and wonderful items to bid on... soon! First, a quick introduction to our new faces in the crowd. Not that I can see them!
So in case you're wondering about the masks... When it comes to our affairs, we at Mirror House understand the need for both discretion and exclusivity.
Which is why this room is completely filled with poison gas- a gas specifically chosen from Gotham's grand history!
It's a real vintage, too. Quite potent. If ingested, it causes all sorts of delightfully black delusions before sparking massive, successive brain hemorrhages in its victims! All in a matter of minutes, too!
Don't worry though, new friends- as always, I've made sure your masks have been modified to filter out this particular gas.
Now, the philosophy of Mirror House is quite simple. We believe, wholeheartedly, that evil is humanity's divine spark.
See, some people think that what makes us a species divine, what separates us from soulless animals is our propensity for good.
And yet, if I may, I'd like to propose another theory.
A retort, if you will... Because goodness... Compassion, generosity. These are things that do, in fact, occur in the wild, between lower forms of life. But evil...
...True malevolence, though... No. No, that you don't see among the birds and the bees and the monkeys in the trees.
And so it is in evil, our capacity for utter wickedness, that we see our true, divine selves reflected most clearly. Now, as some of you know, my name is Etienne... I've had the honor of being the dealer and auctioneer for Mirror House for many years.
I've done auctions all over the world. But there's nowhere I like holding an event more than Gotham City. Nowhere... Nowhere is the human spirit more visible than the streets of Gotham City. You can feel the city feed on it, the desires of its people, the shadowed dreams. Where else houses such dark angels? Two-Face. Mr. Zsasz. The Joker.
And now we begin! Our first item...
It comes from Lebanon. Beirut, specifically. It's a magnificent piece, and a former posession of the Joker. Allegedly, it was used to beat one of the Robin's brains in. Though I haven't been able to verify that. Still, if you look closely, there seems to be some human tissue still on the edge.
But wait, wait. See, we have an even bigger item up for grabs, so to speak. Mr. William Rhodes? Are you out there? Where are you, my friend?
Ah, there you are! Number 47. A rich number, 47... '47 is the year the AK-47 was first produced. Oh, and the year of the Black Dahlia murder in Hollywood. It's also the number of species of bats indigenous to this country...
See, friends, it's my belief that Mr. Rhodes isn't who he says he is. Oh, his identification checked out fine, his credentials... But look closely and you'll see it's all smoke and mirrors. Which is why his is the one mask I didn't modify. I imagine you must be feeling the effects by now, Mr. Rhodes? Or should I say, BATMAN?
I told you this was going to be a special night! Because here, I give to you, our true first item- The Batman! And the best part is, there's no need to bid! No, consider him a giveaway! So take him! Tear him apart!
And keep his bones for yourselves!
Visual references from the book:
As per the criteria, the model is exactly 24x24 studs with no overhang.
Man My last minute throw together may not get me outa round 1. I joined late but hopefully I can get out and you can get out and we face off for the victor. You are very skilled! The details in that build are amazing!
