28/07/2013 - I've set myself a challenge. Starting 28/7/2013, ending 10/08/2013, I need to create (or rather recreate) a design based on the following concept:
What if "the king" also had a Steam Knight armour?
- The armour must look like it is intended for royalty, (in other words it needs to look better designed, made from stronger materials, and possibly better decorated than the other armours. Possibly more ceremonial looking than functional).
- The armour MUST include at least one feature no previous Steam Knight has.
- The armour should include a weapon "fit for a king". (In other words, don't rip off an existing design).
- The final design should be ready to upload to Cuusoo no later than 11/08/2013.
Edit(05/08/2013): (work in progress) I'm going to be posting images of each version as I complete them, here are links to the current crop 1 3 4
As I explained in the notes for "3" I scrapped the changes for "2" before I took any images so they are not included.
In a realm of magic the wise men and elves have invented steam technology, these walking suits of armour have been dubbed "Steam Knights".
Name: Emperor Rex
Known History: Rex is the ruler of the human occupied lands of the medieval Universe of the Steam Knights. For most of his life he has ruled from his lion sculpted golden throne with honour and wisdom, but the rising threat of the Wyvern sect of humans has caused him to become more directly involved in the wars fought to protect his lands.
Seeking the aid of the Wiseman of the Woods, Rex was given a silver talisman with strange characters inscribed on it in a language Rex recognised from the ship wrecks washed ashore following his war with the invaders from the East.
Returning, troubled by this revelation, he sat in his throne pondering the implications, when the castle was attacked. The combination of Rex's need to act and the Eastern magics of the Changelings transformed the throne into a Steam Knight armour.
After engaging Lord Bryson in battle the armour converted into its secondary form to battle Bryson's Cockatrice, that of a huge golden lion.
Before this goes over to Cuusoo, there are a few cosmetic changes I'd like to make first. For starters this is possibly one of the least steam punk looking of all the designs to date. A number of tiles move when I don't want them to making it difficult to grab the right joints. I'm also not sure what I think about all the bare studs and the reverse side is a little bland.
I realise that a lion wasn't in the running for the next Changeling design, this was just a way of testing some ideas I've been toying with for a possible Griffin, Manticore and chimera variant.
Looking at the design I'm not sure I like how thin the limbs turned out. I think I need to figure out a way to bulk them out without loosing the transformation scheme or the general proportions. The weapon was a fudge and I'm not sure I like it. It's too long to function as a tail and not really what I was picturing for an Emperor to wield in battle. May try designing something that functions more like a shield / sword combination that combines to form the lion's lower spine and tail.
It wasn't an issue in the previous Changeling designs, but the Knight hands are a little exposed in Lion mode. "kibble" is the term I believe.
I've had some ideas for disguising them, but they mostly involve an extensive redesign of the forearm. My idea now is perhaps to have the forearm and front part of the lion's leg be the same element, those removing the forelimb transformation as such but perhaps just have it flip round with the hand hidden maybe inside a forearm shield with the claws protruding from the reverse to form a stylised foot that function as "decoration" in Knight form.
My original plan was that Rex's armour would also be capable of flight. However in the way I designed the cockpit wings would be a little difficult to place. But I'm planning some changes to the placing of the armour pieces in version 3 which might provide room for a more stable wing attachment point.
The weapons have undergone two or three redesigns tonight, the latest looks more like a sword a king might use but is still too long to function effectively as a lion's tail. So I may just scrap the current lower body and rebuild from the sword out and see what works.
If anyone has any other ideas let me know, this is possibly the culmination of the entire Operation: Steam Knight / Medieval Universe concept and quite possibly will be the last one this year. So I want it to be the best.
