My very first Mech.
About this creation
This is my first and only Lego Mech (so far). I made it in Fall 2003, after much procrastination. I think I was just awestruck by many of my fellow LUGOLA members, particularly Bryce McGlone ,who were already "Masters of Mech." I figured anything I built would look like a Playskool toy in comparison, so I stuck to the spaceships. But when I bought an AT-AT set and saw the huge click-joints, I figured I should at least try to put them to use in a MOC. It took me about a week, working on and off, to complete Mech 1. Overall, I think it turned out pretty good for a first try at Mech building.

In my usual tradition of stark, contrasty pictures of my MOC's in space, I had to get a shot like this.

The model stands about 16" high, from feet to antennae, and is just over 9" wide at the missile pods. The head and missile pods move together, and the pods tilt up and down independently. This mech has a crew of two with the gunner in the front seat and pilot in back.

This mech has anti-personnel cannons in front, which also tilt up and down, and a small "butt cannon" in the rear, which swivels in all directions.

A shot of the mech "walking." I used the large click-joints from the AT-AT set (or AT-TE) on the legs, at the hips and knees. The hip/torso girdle shifts forward on the left or right, depending which leg is stepping forward, while the upper torso/head can remain steady or pan around 360 degrees. The ankles also tilt and the toes flex to adjust for uneven terrian.

A back view offering another look at the butt cannon and some of the torso greebles. Overall, I tried to minimize the greebles in favor of a smooth, armor plated look.

A close up of the cockpit with the gunner in front and pilot in back, much like a Huey Cobra.

The big UCS X-Wing canopy allowed for a nice, roomy cockpit and more details.

I have no idea how these guys would even get in and out of this thing! Anyone got a 35 foot ladder?!

Very good for a first mech!! I have a suggestion though you should make it so the cockpit can detach and transform into a small fighter pod.

Cool, not bad for a week (on and off) mech. Did you get the pilots in the t-16 skyhopper set, that's what it looks like

To Knoll Grey: I am a mech builder myself, And i use click joints all the time. Given, I don't use the big AT-AT ones, but still. Just because you use a piece that makes something easier doesn't make it cheating, and God only knows what would make you think that that was "cheating".

the click-joints are kind of cheating, leg strength is one of the hardest parts of mech building.the missile pods are pretty sweet though

In my opinion, one of the finest MOCs on the site. Stunning mix of detail and clarity of design. One of the best, and a huge influence on my own designs.

Cool! Really cool, especially for your first mech. You should definitely try to make more. .... Actually, I do have a large LEGO ladder.

I think I saw this in your folder before and wondered why it wasnt posted here. I think its a cool mech. I love the rocket launchers on the sides. This turned out like my first mech (mine didnt have any detail at all but the shape is simular). My only suggestion is to shorten the pylons mounting the rockets to the "head". I think all your mocs are amazing, so keep up the good work.
