As I'm currently taking a little break from MOCing, I've been going through some older designs to see what I have and haven't already shared here on MOCpages.
Back in November 2009, I was experimenting with t-bar joints to try and come up with a mecha/robot frame which was suitable for construction. This yellow robot, with his huge pincer hands, was the first attempt.
Originally uploaded to my DesignedByMe gallery 19 November 2009, LD01 was intended to be the first of a new class of MOCs I was experimenting with. The results can be seen here:
There are a lot of design choices I made because of the limitations of the DesignedByMe theme and my desire to upload the finished design. For one thing, some parts were only available in a limited number of colours, and others were only available if you didn't upload them.
Over the last 4 years I've learned a great deal about the placing of parts in LDD, so some of the joints wouldn't be made like this (by me) now. If I get time to fiddle, I may reinvent the design for 2013 (as I did with Big Red last year and the Spiderbots earlier this year).
In my view the general shape, squat with huge powerful hands, large footprint and many points of articulation, made this a very strong contender for my best design of 2009. The colour scheme is consistent with construction vehicles. The limbs hinted clearly to its function while still giving it some versatility for other functions should the need arise.
WHAT DIDN'T WORK?
I've always been dubious about the waist joint, it feels too exposed and the off-centre positioning was always an issue for me.
UPDATED VERSION 2013
As I noted above if I found time I intended to take the original idea (a dock worker / demolition / construction robot)and update it based on new construction techniques I've developed.
I'll post commentary later, my laptop is experiencing issues and it is a little difficult right now.
Sorry to use a comment on one of your creations as a way to contact you. I thought that you might be interested to see that I've built an LDD version of my opitcal illusion space-station. It's not as good as the birck-built one, mainly because of the lack of contrast between light and dark grey in LDD. The main thing is that you can do it in LDD :) http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/369179

Yay, now I know I'm not the only one that posts old MOCs. As for the waist joint, maybe it would work with a bit more armor covering it. I did a a waist joint on a BIO-MOC (named Ciel, it's on my homepage) that I told worked well to keep it in shape.
