M.O. : Round #3: That Steam Guy Vs. Brickmaster Tommy
M.O. Round three! category: MOCer style. Every MOCer has a unique building style, some more "signature" than others. Pick your favorite builder and try to replicate their style in your entry. You may build any type of moc you wish but when we look at it we want to say “Oh, he built that like “X” would have. Who did I chose? well let me tell you!, AFOLS respect him, TFOLS worship him, KFOLS ask for his autograph! iiiiiitss... Nannan Zhang! Now in no way am I as good a builder as he is, but i tried to copy his clean cut style, his strange fables, and his great use of bright colors in drab environments.

"Private Simmons, if you would, repeat your report to us in as much detail as you can recall"

"Yes sir, I was in the cargo bay, making a rudimentary cargo check, when I suddenly noticed the large ornate box we were supposed to bring to Oroboros-5 had a large eye right on the front of the box!
"an Eye? Private?"
"yes sir, though if you went to check I promise it would be gone."

"the eye was unnatural sir, perfectly round and smooth. it stared at me without blinking"

"suddenly, and without a sound, the lid began to open. I dropped my weapon, which I know is a breach of regulation sir, not to mention plain stupid. but sir, when the lid began to open..."

"You do know that your helmet visor is fitted with a light filter, if there was any bending or distorting light or any form of holographic image your helmet should have registered so and alerted you"

"yes, sir, I do know, which was why I was so startled, because when the lid opened TENTACLES emerged, Sir, black tentacles, completely unsegmented and smooth, no suckers, no hooks, no barbs, just a pulsing pink light on the end of the largest one"

"The light just pulsed at me. Slowly I could feel my senses drain away, I was in a trance, In fact, sir, if it hadn't been for the alarm going off, i'd proabably still be there! It startled me and i broke out of my stupor, grabbed my gun, and ran away."
"actually, Private Simmons, I don't think you'd still be there at all. I also think it would be best for everyone if you forgot this entire thing"

The box by itself

The vig from behind

The base by itself

The tentacles.

My vote goes to your opponent too. But awesome job nonetheless.

Tough luck with the judges in what was always going to be a difficult category. I really like the build itself and while you captured some elements of Nannan's style well, I wonder if the eye is a bit too cartoony for giving the sense of dread required! Good job though.

Tough luck with the judges, but as they said, this was a close one and I think you did an outstanding job.

My vote went to your opponent, but good effort nonetheless! I particularly like the floor technique you've employed here (and your use of similar pieces as crates). Simple yet effective!

My vote went with your opponent this time. But don't worry too much, it was a close call and it could go either way! Good luck with the other judges! ~ Chris.

What I like best about this is that the whole MOC is nice and clean with great details - well done!

A truly difficult challenge. And, one that you compounded by choosing Nannan's style. I was reading in the MO thread when you chose him and thought that it was going to be a brutal pick. His style is extremely subtle and nuanced. To deliver on that is tremendously tricky. However, what you created here mimics his abstract ideas quite well and the clean presentation is a hallmark of his work. It is a wonderful moc and definitely one you should be proud of, but identifying it as Nannan's style does not quite work. Still an excellent job and I wish you the best of luck!

Clever idea! I like your use of red as the inlay for the box! Good Luck! :)

I like how you made the edges of the "eye box" and the tenticles are cool also. However, the eye on the box looks a little, um, unrealistic and flat. I had to read your story fo figure out it was an eye. anyways, you had the hardest category yet in my opinion, so I wish you good luck with the judges.
