Mike Mulligan and Mary Anne
The second creation in my "Steam Shovels of Children's Literature" series featuring Mike and Mary Anne from “Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel” by Virginia Lee Burton.
About this creation
For this build I worked from the illustration on the opening page of the book:

The right side of Mary Anne is differentiated from the left as it features the coal bin:

The dipper bucket on Mary Anne can be raised and lowered by turning the smokestack:

A view of the front:

If you liked this build, be sure to check out my other steam shovel post:
“But the Big Thing Just Said, ‘Snort!’"

Also, please be sure to comment if you are aware of any other children’s books that feature steam shovels so I can be sure to add them to my "Steam Shovels of Children's Literature" series.

Thank you for stopping by!

Quoting Dennis Price Perhaps "Katy and the Big Snow" would be appropriate for those of us living in the upper Midwest section of the U.S. . . . bbbbrrrrr!
I have that story in the Virginia Lee Burton Treasury with Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, so I'll take a look at it. Although with a foot of snow on the lawn and temperatures forecast well above freezing this weekend, an inflatable boat may soon be in order. Thank you for your comment.

Quoting Ian Spacek I think I recall seeing this at BrickWorld.
Ian, I did have it on display at BrickWorld, but I got a little behind on posting the new builds I put on display. With the new year here I figured I should get all of last year's pieces posted, so when I set up for my MELO Rd 1 photo shoot I pulled this and a few other pieces off of the shelves. I'll be posting another of these builds tonight and the other two later this week.

That's quite a specialized - and deeply charming - niche you're filling here! Another wonderful addition to this fine series. I'll keep my eyes peeled...

A classy, well-done model for a classic book. Always loved this story since it showcases how something old can be repurposed and useful in new ways. Plus, it's a good story. Perhaps "Katy and the Big Snow" would be appropriate for those of us living in the upper Midwest section of the U.S. . . . bbbbrrrrr!

I think I recall seeing this at BrickWorld. An excellent build Mr. Merrill! I'm particularly impressed with the functionality. Heh, I've still got this book sitting on my shelf. I always thought it'd make a great MOC, but I never got around to it myself. That said, this is fun to see! Cheers!
