Trolls in space! The Atrollo is an assault fighter from the Troll Galactic Fleet. It is over-powered, but under steered... It has smart weapons, but fool gunners...
About this creation
Trolls have not evolved at all since the Castle era, nor have they made any scientific progress; the trolls have always kept to their foolhardy - but often victorious - strategy of brute force and plunder. As minifigs moved on to the Pirate era, into the LEGO City, and eventually into the Classic Space era, the trolls just plundered more sophisticated technology. That is why so few trolls venture into space; they rarely hijack spaceships that can accomodate there ample girth...
For propulsion the Atrollo fighter is equipped with a massive Anoat thruster. Of course it is not of Troll design, but the Anoat thruster is perfect for them; it can fling a craft to near light speed in a few seconds, but with the poor vector control it is likely that it will smash you right into the nearest asteroid.
For those non-evadable asteroids - or anything else that moves for that matter - the Atrollo fighter has two Curunir laser cannons. The Curunir laser cannons are mounted on ball joints that gives them a flexibility that is very non-troll-like. The trolls do like that though, it enables them to bombard anything below the Atrollo, gives them a fair chance in a dog fight, or they can fire at anyone foolish enough to follow.
The Atrollo fighter's cockpit snugly fits two trolls; the pilot and the gunner. The robust design of the seats may look like something a troll could make, but they don't, just don't. The control panels belie a level of sophistication a troll could not swing a club at. The tiny keys have served a purpose for their former owners, but are now just a place to store snacks and grocery lists.
From the hangar, Atrollo fighters are catapulted into space via the launch rail. The belly fin of the Atrollo fighter makes them stable in space or air, but rather wobbly on the ground. Its elegance is tell tale sign that the Atrollo fighter is not of troll design.
There is no quest to folly for Dalv, and now Dalv has snuck his way into the troll hangar, and hid himself in the snack trolley. But he has been found and is in danger of becoming a snack himself!
I wanted to build a crazy spaceship again, but wanted to keep it smaller than last time. I think I did an okay job of the first, but did poorly for the second... The hangar grew out of the necessity for a display stand, and then just grew out of proportion. Standing on two stud wide rooftile bricks the Atrollo fighter is quite stable, but during the build I worked on one side at a time and it was in constant danger of tipping over.
The biggest challenge was to keep the battery box accessible (but out of sight), to switch the lights on and off, and to be able to replace the batteries. When the final designs were built, and I assembled the two modules, the MOC fell apart completely... The slightest of misfits and the weight of the wings caused too much stress on it. After I finally found out what it was that did not fit, after having finally accepted that it indeed did not fit anymore, it was easily corrected...
So very cool. You can call a fighter unique, but you can usually find a parallel somewhere. I can't pick it out here. Love that strange shape, and the duel cockpit is inspired. The engine work may be my favorite part. Well done.
Brick-built brilliance. It's great to see a ship built on a different scale to mini-fig. Parrington Levens and I have both built ships for Technic men, which was interesting. I also like how solid this looks but also how many interesting shapes and angle you've included. The castle wall technique for the curved engine section works very too. All toped off with a great and funny backstory, I think that this is a superb build.
Trolls in space? Epic Spastle! ;) Great build, the large scale really messes with the head. The last shot with Jabba and the LOTR trolls really gives a sense of the tremendous size. Love the ship design, well-built yet sturdy enough to look like a troll would fly it.
