About this creation

Decepticon: Mantis
Alt Mode: Cybertronian H Tank
Function: Warrior
Motto: War is an art form, welcome to my gallery.
Biography: Like many Decepticons, Mantis joined their ranks for the opportunity to fight. So enthusiastic is he at fighting, that he has developed tactics and methods even other Decepticons find inappropriate. He has a tendency to leave his targets exhibited as trophies, and has been compared to the human tyrant Vlad the Impaler, due to his grotesque and sadistic tendencies. Unlike many sadists he is not secretly cowedly, in fact, he will often leave himself deliberately vulnerable for the thrill of a confrontation with a seemingly superior opponent.
Abilities: In robot form he is armed with a photon blaster and vibro-sword. He is very agile in this form, seeming to dance across war zones. In vehicle form he is an insectoid inspired h-tank. This light yet armoured vehicle can traverse rubble and wrecked streets with ease. He is armed in this form with a ranged photon charger, which is the combined form of his robot form weapons.
Weakness: His vehicle form is difficult to right if upended necessitating transformation to escape, he relies heavily on speed and agility in combat with heavier stronger opponents.

Another LEGO doodle this time to try and utilise two designs I created independently. The first was the transformation of the upper body, which was originally intended to be a completely different character but I liked how it turned out more as a sort of tank. The second was the stylised tank treads which I've used before and have been experimenting with for a Shockwave figure.

The vehicle form is sort of intended to represent a Fuchikoma styled tank (as seen in Ghost in the Shell). The name Mantis I choose in part because of the weird hooked claws look of the front section and the weird standing position of the front end which means the occkpit looks a little like a preying mantis. I deliberately choose a green colour scheme to accentuate this analogy.

It isn't the best design I've done for a TF. The main body is very gappy and the leg transformation especially would be difficult to pose in real bricks, especially considering the foot is a little small and there are three joints supporting the whole upper-body this might lead to sagging. In a crouching pose it is a little less obvious, but I'd need to build in some stops to limit movement. I also feel the cockpit is too exposed in robot form and looks a little silly hung off the back like that. If I were to develop this design further (which I probably won't) I'd try to figure out a way to hide the cockpit inside the backpack.

I'd like to start creating more designs with Earth alt modes, such as recognisable cars and jets, rather than these Cybertronian / Futuristic designs which are often a little bit cheaty.

All hail Vlad the Transformer! Truly enjoyed the backstrory coupled with a great design. Now lets see his trophy collection. The more macabre the merrier!
