This is my design for a ‘battle pack’ style official LEGO set for The Lord of the Rings, based on the battle of Minas Tirith in The Return of the King. I designed the set so that it would be as useful as possible to have multiples, and also so that it could be combined with possible future sets.
About this creation
The first part is the Orc catapult, this build consists of 126 pieces including the skull amo. The amo can be loaded using the bottom half of the rock as the basket, or the rock can be launched itself. The firing mechanism is via elastic bands, or a string pulley system (not shown). The band/string is attached to the rock weight and threads round the grey rollers at the front.
The second part is the siege tower, which has three floors each tall enough for an Orc to fit. The door at the top folds open and has two large hooks to grab the castle wall. The middle floor’s walls open to reveal where two flick-fire missiles can be launched.
The bottom level has a compartment which deploys a small flick-fire ballista. The tower is made of 237 bricks in total including the 24 brick ballista.
On the side of Sauron’s forces I have included two ordinary Orc soldiers, one easterling soldier who would need a new helmet element and an armoured mountain troll, which would use the same mould as the cave troll but would be a different colour and would have more printing to give it the armoured look. To lead the army I have also included one Orc general based on the Orc with the skull on his head who meets Aragorn and the army of the dead at the docks (another minifigure head stacked on top looked silly in my opinion so I used the fez instead which would need printed details).
The troll’s mace is a new design from the club from the mines of moria, it is made of 21 bricks. The weapon to the far right is an alternative weapon for the troll.
Finally on the side of Gondor there is a small module of the outer wall of Minas Tirith, complete with a turret section with a small detachable catapult. The two sections can be split apart and rearranged/combined with duplicates with complete freedom.
The gimmick of the tower other than the catapult is that a leaver at the back if pushed will destroy it as if it was struck by the catapult.
Finally there is three Gondor soldiers (who would have a new helmet), they have different weapons as shown but a small weapons rack behind the wall means all three can have a sword and shield.
Quoting Toa Infernum
Interesting. I'd cut out the siege tower though, too many pieces. All the "battelpacks" so far have been $30.
Honestly, I think your wall segment, with a build of Grond, would be awesome.
I agree as it stands it would be way too expensive for a battle pack but I didn’t want to sacrifice anything or split it up ;)
Grond is coming very soon!
