About this creation
Because of some sort of frustration about finding a parking space in a busy city, I wanted to invent a solution to all this trouble. Why not turning all 4 wheels of a car 90 degrees in the direction of the parking space? The only thing next is moving exactly sideways, which is not difficult for a car, as only 4WD (four wheel drive) is required to drive in a straight line sideways.
So, building this technique in a car requires also building a car. The car was built and designed by me, it is a two-seater with a big bonnet and a 'sporty' back. I didn't have a specific car brand in mind while building. Off course, you can put some suggestions in the comments...
The big problem of turning the car wheels 90 degrees in either direction is the need for enormous wheel housings. Where should the engine go? Making this car fully manual would not quite show the functionality of driving 'easily', so I fitted the car with the Lego Power Functions system. The motors for steering and driving were put under the 2 seats of the car in the car floor. I took much advantage of the L-motor because it can be built in very flat.
The front and rear axle have their own Power Functions M-motor for steering. The battery box, which could be the rechargeable BB or the 9V BB was located just behind the seats.
The wheels just move completely sideways. Where are they?!
This concept means that very small parking spaces are possible for big cars because no reversing into the space is needed, because you just move sideways in it!
Returning to the car itself: I fitted the cabin with some details, like a gear lever, doors that open and a steering wheel. One L-motor can be seen, it is under the left seat.
This picture shows everything you maybe wanted to know about this car: 2 L-motors for propulsion, 2 M-motors for steering and 4 enormous wheel housings. It was still possible to add differentials, so also in normal curves the care drove smoothly. Remarkable detail: the frame between the middle, front and rear parts is just 1 stud wide! This illustrates how enormous the wheel housings have to be.
The idea of parking a car in this way was thought out by me some years ago but others could have invented it too at this time. So many (scientific) inventions have the name of 2 inventors and I don't think this is an exception...
Nice car for the girls ! (They say it's difficult for them to park their cars correctly). It's a joke, of course. :)
More seriously, I saw this concept years ago in a magazine. This magazine presented some crazy inventors / engineers projects for the Lepine Contest. It was at the beginning of the 80's, 1982 or 1984 if i'm correct.
I don't know it the Jeep concept car Hurricane can do the same as yours, but it shows that your idea could be more or less implemented in real cars in a near future.

If you put an electric motor in every wheel (in a real car), the power losses would be even less than with conventional engines because the efficiency of electric motors is higher. I didn't do that because the space was too small.
