Liebherr 1500 8.1
About this creation
** update AUG 31 2017**

This was an old post. However, as the 40th anniversary of Technic approaches I thought I would celebrate by bringing out one of my favorite builds. This:

So I dusted it off, fixed a couple of things, and viola! Here it is again. Never made a video of it driving, etc. While were hunkered down for Hurricane Harvey it was a perfect time to made a little video of this build.

Hello Ya’all - Here is my rendition of the Liebherr 1500 8.1. Two driven axles, six steered, just like the real thing. Every thing is powered and functional, drive steering, boom raise/lower, extension, hook raise/lower, outriggers, etc. I will begin by taking you through the building process.

First off, the as can be seen above, body was so long I had to get creative with PF motor wiring. I did not have enough extension cords, and I have tons of PF control switches, so I used them instead, I just never shut them off. They work great!
Below, because of the immense weight, I had to add a second undercarriage to the chassis. This has added to the stiffness of the chassis, mainly to help when I transport the thing but also helps keep axles that drive the outriggers etc. straight so they can function. They don’t work if the chassis is bent too much, because there is simply too much tension on them.

Second, I moved the black curved liftarm you see in the pic below back one stud. This allows the boom more vertical rise than the plain 42009 Lego model. This mimics real cranes better, allowing the boom much more strength. As can be seen in the pics below, the boom in my model rises much closer to a 85 degree angle (which is more or less what you want).

Here are some more photos...

And now, doing some much-needed chores around the house...

Detailed CAT Diesel Engine....

Counter weight needed for heavy jobs....

Helping my daughter install the roof of her Friends House...(her own MOC)

Thanks for looking! Also, coming soon will be a lifting jib to help with really big jobs. I hope to add this in the coming weeks.

Thanks Elio! Yea... I love this crane. Still have it displayed. One of my larger builds.
Quoting Elio Salsano Hi there, This is fantastic. I have the big technic crane car thing. I cannot imagine building that myself. And this is bigger and looks fantastic! Greetz, Elio

A great way to use that 42009 and make it better. Much, much better!

I know... it really is fun. I probably get too immersed and don't pay enough attention to aesthetics... perhaps something that I will focus on later.
Quoting Jeremy McCreary Superb mobile crane. I'm not familiar enough with the Liebherr 1500 to comment on fidelity, but the exceptional visual coherence of your rendition makes it instantly believable. Keep up the excellent work. BTW, I also enjoy getting immersed in the math and science involved in this kind of LEGO(R) modeling.
