The Type 80 is a series of second-generation main battle tanks (MBTs) from China. Based on the Type 79 design, the Type 88 entered service with the PLA in the 1980s
About this creation
Whilst the earlier Type 69 MBT was a further development of the Type 59 MBT, the Type 80 has a number of new features including a brand new hull.
Turret based off of Alex Sonny's Type 59
The driver is seated to the front right with some ready use 105mm ammunition to his left. The three man turret is in the centre with the commander and gunner on the right and the loader on the right. The powerpack is to the rear.
The 105mm rifled gun fires standard NATO ammunition and can be elevated from -4 degrees to +18 degrees under full power control with turret traverse a whole 360, manual controls are provided for emergency use. A 7.62mm MG is mounted coaxial with the main armament and a 12.7mm HMG is mounted on the turret for AA defense.
A computerized fire control system is fitted and this includes laser rangefinder for the gunner. One version has the laser rangefinder installed in the gunner's sight while another has the rangefinder mounted over the 105mm gun in a similar manner to that of the NORINCO Type 69 MBT.
For deep fording, a snorkel can be fitted to the vehicle and a fire detection/suppression is standard. If required a layer of composite armor can be fitted to the glacis plate for improved battlefield survivability.
Key Recognition Features
* Well-sloped glacis plate with splash-board running across mid-way up, turret center and engine towards the rear. Unlike Type 59/69, no visible exhaust outlet on left side above last road wheel station. Long range fuel drum often carried on the rear
* Circular turret has curved sides with loader's cupola on right side with externally mounted 12.7mm AA HMG, 105mm gun barrel has thermal sleeve and fume extractor.
* Suspension either side has six road wheels with gap between 1st/2nd and 2nd/3rd road wheels, idler front, drive sprocket rear, three return rollers, upper suspension covered by skirt
Produced in Chinese state factories. Production complete, in service with China and Myanmar (Burma)
Type 80 tanks were used to break up the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests and were captured on film confronting the now infamous "tank man."
