Balrog - Version 1
My interpretation of Tolkien's Balrog; version-one.
About this creation
This is version-one of my interpretation of Tolkien’s Balrog. And as you can see, I have opted to go with the winged version as opposed to the non-winged version – I think it looks meaner.

This was certainly an effort in patients as I put together elements and tore them apart again. The torso alone was a weekend’s worth of spare time. I finally, after 4-months, sat back down and worked on this until it was finished while watching Noein with my kids. They chipped in their thoughts and helped me choose parts for this beast (it truly was a beast to build).

I have to admit I even took hammer and chisel to a couple of “Brick, Modified 2 x 2 with Pin Hole, Rotation Joint Ball Half (Horizontal Top), Rotation Joint Socket” to allow for the placement of these pieces in the thighs. This was allow me to use them as the hips. I have to admit it was not an easy decision and I prayed to the Lego God for forgiveness.

All other parts are stock Lego.

Things I am going to change for version-two
1)Change the torso to make it a bit shorter and wider to match the scale of the other elements.
2)Change the wings to a frame and fabric design to allow for much larger wings
3)May add some of the LED bricks to act as fire
4)Change the shoulder pieces to ones similar to the hips
5)Possibly make the legs longer, especially the foot to give it more of a bestial look
6)Add the Moria bridge scene (far future at this point)

Hope you enjoy this creation, and I would like to thank Justin for the inspiration for the whip.

Don’t forget to check out Bricklink for all the lovely parts you could possibly desire. As a personal experience, shipping from England and Australia is very reasonable – about the same for small orders as from the States.

Woah... I didn't know you built this... man, get yourself a few black Bionicle parts from BL and have another go at it, I'd love to see the result!

NIce work but i would add more fire like stuff because he was a valar of fire (demon of fire) and had flames all along his body. But otherwise great job. COme join my LOTR group Fellowship of the Brick

Wow, this doesn't even look like Lego! Wonderfully crafted and terrifying, just as a Balrog should be...

Just for fun, let's douse him in lighter fluid, strike a match and... Yeah, like I could EVER justify something as horrific as that... would be pretty cool looking though. Make sure you have the camera ready. ~ Chris.

It's nice. The face looks kinda cool, but not like the real Balrog. I love the light up brick idea. You should totally go for it. Please make a 2.0!! Oh, and also... SHAME ON YOU for damaging innocent pieces to make this thing. For SHAME!!!!!

I can't believe it - someone actually saw something they LIKED on my old Balrog MOC. I feel appreciated. *sniff* Of course, this model is way, way better than mine. Love the beefy, solid looking arms and legs. I would point out a few things that could use improving, but you already listed all those yourself. D'oh! Ah well; anyway, awesome job! Can't wait to see version 2!

This is an excellent representation, but to me, the body looks a bit robotic, unless that's what you were aiming for, I don't know ^^. The face is awesome, I love the red teeth. Looks pretty complicated. All in all, well done! Tolkien would be pleased to see his creation become a LEGO menace. Very nice!

Ha! I see I'm not the only one offering up a few Hail Mary's to the Lego Deity. Anyway, fun idea and nicely done. I know I shouldn't hold my breath, but it sure would be cool to see that Balrog with Gandalf, the company, some Orcs, and the bridge of Kazadum...but hey, no pressure. (do it! do it!)

Wow, if this is version 1, I can't wait to see the next. Like you said in your description, the torso is a little small, but everything else is spot on. I like the face and whip.
