2014 MO Round 1 : "Guitar bands will soon disappear!"
My entry for the 2014 MocOlympics Round 1, category "Embarrassing moments in history"
About this creation
The link to the 2014 MocOlympics.

December 31st 1961, Decca Records, London. An unknown band has just passed an audition...

Producer: "Well kids, thank you for taking part to this audition"

Paul: "It's been a pleasure Sir!"

Producer: "Unfortunately, it's a little too bluesy, too rock'n'roll. And rock'n'roll is dead, you know?"

John: "What..."

George: "...the..."

Ringo: "...Huh?"

Producer: "Sorry, but this here tape is going straight to the trash can. As my boss Dick Rowe would say, guitar bands will soon disappear anyway... So good bye and good luck."

Embarrassing isn't it? :D

* * *

I took some artistic license with this.

1) Ringo wasn't part of the Beatles, the drummer was Pete Best. But who knows Pete Best nowadays, except for his AA sponsor? And who would resist making a caricature of Ringo?

2) The Beatles didn't get their answer right away. In fact they had to harass Decca to get a (negative) answer.

3) The answer was given to their manager Brian Epstein, not to them.

But the embarrassing part is true, including the quotes "Guitar bands will soon disappear" and "rock'n'roll is dead". A year later, the Beatles are number 1 in England. 10 more months and they're number 1 in the US. The rest is history... (See? That's the category!)

A few more pics. Paul, John, George and Ringo in all their bricky glory:

The insightful producer:

His desk and typewriter:

It's the second time I build a Beatles MOC, and again it's for the 1st round of the MO!
Thanks for watching, Please rate and/or comment, see ya!

Quoting Oliver Becker Hi Tom, I came on this page only now, and it' s a great pleasure to see your accuracy and lovingly details! So I think, for me it would have been 1. place / the TOP: But most "MOCcer" seem to undervalue anatomic structures or caricatures built in LEGO. Here you have to breathe "soul" into your build without any panoply of minifigs a.s.o. ... Salu´
Thanks for the kind words Oliver. BTW this moc did get the first place, but it was only the first round... MocOlympics is a long-distance race! :-)

Quoting Kermunklin the Giant Evil House Head While I am not a huge fan of the Beatles, I am definitely a huge fan of this MOC. Great likenesses, even I could recognize Paul and John without notation. Oddly enough, the thing that impresses me the most about this build is the amazing typewriter. Good job.
Thanks, the fact that you recognized them is a great reward! I can even pardon you not to be a fan ;-)

Quoting matt rowntRee Tom, I think you're going to have to step it up a bit if you want to compete here. I mean really? A perfect score? That is not how you win buddy. Wait a minute... Actually, I have just been informed that THAT is exactly how you win. whatever. XD Tom, what's to say? How you achieved their actual likeness is nothing short of amazing. I think my favorite is Ringo and his offset eyes. I don't think you could have built this without laughing the entire way through. Just truly phenomenal work, definitely a keeper!
The technical difficulties of the build kept me focused most of the time. Moreover, I often mimic my model's face when I draw or, in this case, sculpt. Fortunately there are NO photos of me in that position... But I must admit I giggle each time I look at them, especially Ringo!

This is really a wonderful piece of work. I've never tried it, but judging from what I've seen, achieving any resemblence to an actual person with LEGO is a ridiculous challenge. You have seriously done an amazing job with that aspect, (and hey, nobody knows what Pete Best looked like anyway). Nice work on the office equipment as well.

Where to start? Thanks to all of you!!! I'm a little embarrassed because a) this is a lot of compliments and b) I didn't intend to build something this big at first, so I feel a bit like I stole the show... There are lots of awesome builds in this group! Even worse, I don't think I will be able to produce something as big in the next round(s), as real life will take its toll (I'm still partly on vacation)... Anyway, your comments warm my heart, especially when this year's number of entries is a little discouraging... Now to answer particular points : the typewriter was an "entertainment build" between Paul and the rest of the characters, and it turned out to be the centre piece of the MOC! That's a valuable lesson from the MO: you never know where an idea will take you... @ Clayton: a rolodex! Genius idea! Wait, I hadn't got the time 8-) @ Everyone who instantly recognized the fab four : You couldn't make me happier! Thanks again and good luck to the other contestants!
