About this creation
Good morning, afternoon, or evening, viewer. I've been "gone" from the Lego scene on MOCpages for over two years, though I've been quite active on Flickr. Because Flickr, despite trying to be Instagram 2.0 in recent months, actually works when you need it to. It doesn't automatically sign you out either, or compress your images into tiny jpegs... But at least it allows for multiple photos in one post.

I decided I should put all these planes I've been vomiting out on Flickr up on MOCpages. So here we go! I hope I don't get automatically signed out because I took too long to write this up, especially considering those Comcast merchants disconnect my internet every 5 minutes :^)

I'm posting Maelstrom Mk.I because Cliffe preferred her for some reason, despite the blocky wings and stubby fuselage. I built like 50 of these before ceasing production in favor of...

The Mayenne Maelstrom Mk.II, the go-to fighter for Neustrasia. Fast and quick, but not exactly the toughest machine in the world. Interestingly enough, this configuration is actually not possible. Maelstrom can't carry all these weapons, she doesn't have the payload for rockets and drop tanks. Fun fact: several Maelstroms were stolen from their factory and reverse engineered by a certain faction!

Maelstrom for carriers on the left, the Tornade attack aircraft on the right. Tornade is basically Maelstrom, but with reinforced framing and armor. She can carry plenty of weapons, but has lost a lot of speed and maneuverability to make up for it. Send into dogfights at your own risk.

Multi-view. Everyone seems to love this plane the most out of mine. Maybe they too have a thing for big... engines and curvy... canopies? ;^)

Mega-Maelstrom! Given an even BIGGER (inline) engine, and longer wings, and a longer fuselage to balance it out. Supercharged engine and pressurized cockpit, too. Expensive? You bet. We'll be seeing this engine again...

You can see the supercharger intake down at the bottom of the engine. Cliffe thinks the cockpit is too far forward to be balanced, but I disagree. He also thinks it looks better with trapezoid wings, which I also disagree.

Now we move onto the twin-engined planes. This is my personal favorite, the Sainte-Clément Owl Mk.V. Yes, there have been four other versions before this. It began as a copy of the only other He-219 built out of Lego, by Mad Physicist on Flickr, but it's evolved into something else. Kind of. The basic shape is the same, but I've changed so many things that I'm comfortable in calling it mostly my own.

Dedicated night-fighters aren't common. But that's really the only purpose this plane serves. Night music for anti-bomber duty, four forward guns for general anti-plane duty. On offensive missions, the night music is removed. She's got the same engines as the Mega-Maelstrom (but two instead of one), same pressurization too, but a higher service ceiling and much more combat range. Oh, and a cavity magnetron radar! Even more expensive, though.

This is a night-fighter conversion of another plane, you'll meet her shortly. Ignore the writing, this was for a contest I entered on a whim. Luciole is more heavily armed than Owl, so she's not as fast, or able to get as high. Or go as far. But for defensive operations against bombers, she'll do.

I do love those profiles.

In defense of the realm. You can see Owl Mk.IV back there, with four guns in the ventral tray and a much less streamlined nose, with radial engines instead of inline too. Not as great a performer as Owl Mk. V.

Now we come to the Sainte-Clément Chandieu, a fast tactical bomber. This picture is actually the preliminary version on a torpedo run. The next version was ever so slightly different...

This version. Can you spot the difference? It's mostly cosmetic. Chandieu relies more on speed than armament to deal with fighters, and is thus very fast. You can see Tornade back there too. I always felt the landing gear were too skinny to reliably hold the plane's weight, though.

An unusual picture, to be sure, but for some reason I really like taking the wings off my planes. I simply have no idea why. You can see their bellies much easier now, including the ventral trays on the top two.

Ah, the Alençon Griffon, another crowd favorite. Mostly. Some people feel the cockpit is too flattened, but go look at the plane that ultimately influenced this (it should be obvious to nerds). I set out to do a B-29/Me-264 mix, but I decided four separate engines were too mainstream when I read about this plane's namesake. Going fast is kind of my thing for aircraft, so I decided to reduce drag and just have two engines strapped to the same propeller, so to speak. Heating problems abound, but the prize...

Defensive armament isn't amazing, but the payload is. Three separate bays, which means you can put removable fuel tanks in one or even two for extended range. Neustrasian engineers are looking at turning this into another kind of weapons carrier, but said weapons are still in development and classified.

I had no idea the tan was going to glare so bad in the render machine. But you can see the truly xboxhuge wings clearly here, as well as that delicious round body. It was time-consuming to design and make this plane, but I think it was worth it. I am very happy with the product. My only wish is that Lego made turrets easier to build. Otherwise this would have had more than four...

So there you have it, piston engine aircraft.
Addendum: since this game runs with a codified perks and quirks system, I've kept my stats on those secret. But there are plenty of clues in the descriptions for you to make good guesses with :^)

My tiny plane is nothing compared to your collection here. Show me your ways master, if I am worthy. Seriously, I didn't know you had so many planes. I feel so behind.

Very nice work on these, the technique used on all of them works very well. I also like the viarity of planes.

Quoting Omi Chron Is there any way I'd be able to look at them? If not, I'll be content with my memories.
Unfortunately, not at the moment, I've got other things on my plate. I suppose in the future I could briefly resurrect the pages and copy them out, but then I'd have to get in contact with you again. Most of those pictures were lost when my hard drive failed in 2010...

Aha! Well, I think it looks better than the black people tend to opt for :) And that is a shame about Droid Trek. I had a nostalgic desire to look through it again, despite the cheesiness of those early episodes... Is there any way I'd be able to look at them? If not, I'll be content with my memories. [my favourite planes are probably the Luciole, Chandieu, and that Blue Maelstrom Mk II!]

Quoting Omi Chron Wow! These are all very well made! I like the nuances in their creation - there are clear similarities between several of them, but each has its own flair. I like the use of ark grey in the stead of dark transparent; was the renderer tricky with clear, or was it unavailable? On another note, I went cycling through your old creations, but can't seem to find Droid Trek anywhere. I was a huge fan of that series, and was sincerely hoping it could continue. It ended just when stuff got interesting. If you have no intention to follow it up, where might I be able to find it? Thank you, and all the best; Omi
My computer's core temperatures drive up to about 95 degrees Celsius when rendering, so I try to limit transparent parts so I can spend as little time rendering as possible. As for Droid Trek, I deleted those years ago. Well, they're sitting in the MOCpages trashbin, so they're not truly gone, but... Yeah, I'm not too proud of those works. I'm not even sure where that series was going anymore.

Really good fictional aircrafts, that ought to have individual pages. Fine renderings with great color choices. The Maelstrom is my favorite. I can see you´re sometimes built in real bricks. Why not realize the Maelstrom in real bricks?

Excellent work on each model. I like the way you handled the canopy with DBG bricks, clever!!! I particularly like the two-engines bomber and the different "Marks" you created. Design and shape are stunning.
