Many pilots believed the Mk IX was the ultimate Spitfire.
About this creation

Originally conceived in 1942 as a stopgap
model to meet the threat of the German Focke-Wulf
Fw 190 fighter, the Mk IX combined a Mk V fuselage
with more powerful versions of the Rolls-Royce
Merlin V-12. Eventually produced in low-, medium-,
and high-altitude fighter versions (called, respectively,
L.F., F., and H.F.), a total of 5,665 planes
were built, mostly the low-altitude version.

ENGINE: One Rolls-Royce Merlin 66 liquid-cooled V-12
with 1,720 hp
ARMAMENT: Two 20-mm Hispano cannon with 120 r.p.g.,
plus four 0.303-in. Browning machine guns, plus one
500-lb. bomb and two 250-lb. bombs
MAX SPEED @ ALTITUDE: 404 mph (650 km/h) @ 21,000 ft
(6,400 m)
CEILING: 42,500 ft (12,954 m)
INITIAL CLIMB RATE: 3,125 ft/min (952 m/min)

Awesome spitfire. I never thought that canopy piece would work on this plane but you pulled it off beautifully, well done.

Good work on a difficult plane to model. Like the P-51, its tough to get the shape exactly right. I like the profile of the wings.

Good build but the information is incorrect. In terms of sheer values the MkIX was mid range in comparisson to the Griffon spitfires, the Mk XIV, F18 and F22. (Classification changed to F instead of mk) these griffon spits' were far faster, more powerfully armed, had better visibilty and were all round excellent aircraft. If you mean the model that was the greatest joy to fly then you were darn close. The Mk VIII may superficially look like a mk IX. It had the same prop and the engine. Whereas the IX was as you said, a stop gap measure on the inferior Mk V airframe, the XIII was a totally new design with many refinements like a retractable tail wheel, better landing gear, sharper tips to the wings and tail surfaces and twin radiators. Pilots regarded it is the greatest flying aircraft in their memory, an utter joy to fly, but after only a few hundred they canceled it for the quicker to build Mk IX.
