Bracket 1

Category: Gerry Anderson is GOD! Build an iconic vehicle and/or base from any of Mr. Anderson's portfolio: Space: 1999, Captain Scarlet, Thunderbirds. Details should be very high on the priority list as it was for him.

Due to personal preference towards hard science SF and lack of special parts in the right colors for a cool Thunderbirds build, I decided to go with Space: 1999. My ignorance about the show led me to choose an iconic build, the Eagle Transporter.

A few pics of "the beast":

Having chosen minifig scale, I wanted to give this a Classic Space feel with functions and interiors. First function is the retractable landing gear :

The mechanism, repeated 4 times. You just have to turn the maneuvering rockets.

The command module (cockpit), with acces hatch. You can also see the 4 steering rockets around it, and little rockets in the back.

The roof comes off so you can snugly fit 2 minifigs in here :

Lots of computers and space-y stuff...

I'm not totally satisfied with the rear section (propellers), but you can attach it to the command module, which is rather cool!

Now let's get to the middle section...

The service module has its own hatch. It's possible to access it from the command module, the two hatches overlap each other - though I could not take a picture of it.

Some more computers in here...

A look at the underside before taking off the main module...

The passenger module features the main doors...

...And the roof comes off.

Seats and tables...

More space-y stuff. Space coffee machine? Space toilets? Not to mention the obligatory TV screen for instructions coming straight from earth.

Sliding doors at each end :

"Beware of my stun gun!"

The whole set features additional VTOL boosters and an alternative central module, a nuclear waste transportation platform :

The ship in "nuclear waste" mode :

Final pic with the boosters on (you have to take some white grids off) and the minifigs. From left to right : Doctor Helena Russell (Barbara Bain), Commander John Koenig (Martin Landau), Professor Victor Bergman (Barry Morse) and two anonymous pilots, but they do die fast in the series ;-)

* * *

Commentary : when I read the theme, my first thought was: "Who the hell is Gerry Anderson?" When I read Thunderbirds and understood that Space: 1999 stood for "Cosmos 1999", the french title, it became clearer... Sort of! I had never ever watched a single episode from any of the two shows, never heard of Captain Scarlet... Plus I hadn't as much time as for my R1 entry...

Anyway, even with all those grey parts (I wanted to build the main frame out of white), I think it turned out Ok, but not as well as I intended. Hope you like it too!

Thanks to the judges for making me discover such an interesting part of science-fiction TV shows! Thanks to all of you for watching and see you soon!

A truly impressive MOC. There are a few Lego versions out there, however this one has some great internal features. I was wondering whether there was an LDD file and parts list available for this iconic SF vehicle? Great work!

Attention in the Ready Room…The rules for the third iteration of Decisive Action have just been posted in the DA3 Ready Room. We built the Ready Room so motivated competitors could study the DA3 rules and gain understanding before the game begins on 7 April 2018. Well, the rules are now posted. So report to the Ready Room. Get the information, get your head in the game, and above all… get ready. Build! Post! Review! Attack! This is Decisive Action.

Quoting Greg 998 Ever been a fan of Space 1999 (Cosmos 1999 in my country) and this is absolutely fantastic!

Quoting Alex Sonny This is beautiful! I love all the functions and the shape, really retro. The way the cockpit is made is awesome, cramped and functional.
Thank you Alex, the scale is slightly reduced, so everything is cramped in there! ;-) I'm glad you like it!

Quoting Digital Dreams There's a few great looking Eagles out there now and this is certainly one of them. Great opening shot too :)
Thanks, I didn't expect that! Especially when I looked for Lego Eagles AFTERWARDS and realized how many times it had been done!...

Quoting Delatron 3000 Now this category I do know, though thunderbirds, captain scarlet or even terra hawks would have been my choices - I wasn't ever into space1999. That said, I did have a toy eagle when I was a kid and it wasn't this cool! It looks great, but also it's minifig scale, and its modular, and it has functions, and sliding doors, and an alternate set! Did I miss anything? Shame you got no competition here but I would bet on this winning regardless. Seriously super build.
Thanks! Captain Scarlet was my second choice, but I didn't resist venturing into CS... As a child, I always wanted to build things like that but lacked the parts or patience or experience, and often the three at a time!...

Nice modular build and concept. The Eagle is almost always on my mind, when building space-themed things. It´s utilitarian look just seems so "right" for that stuff. For your Lego model -which is excellent- I would have liked a more "clean" and less "noisy" look... (Some day I will have to put my bricks where my mouth is ;-)

Quoting Stephan N Very beautiful. I like it that the individual modules are removable and can be combined. The interior looks very good. The shape is well captured, only the front is too pointed for me personally something. The extending of the props is a highlight for me. Overall, an excellent work. I wish you good luck Tom
Thanks Stephan. The front, like a lot of things, could be improved, but I had to stop: I built 4 versions of it!

Quoting David Roberts Such a brilliant Eagle in such a short time. Folk have plotted and planned their Eagles for years and not come up with such well shaped, detailed ships. Plus it has those retractable landing feet and alternative cargo sections. A superb build!
