For the 2 David's contest 2014
About this creation
Created for the Classic Space Pocket Money Contest 3

consists of 3 pilots, two rover units (detachable) and main patrol skimmer.

Unlike my previous combining ship idea this one is far more solidly built for extra swooshing. The combined form is also more solid making rolling while combined possible for extra play value.

Each rover is attached using technic pins and can be removed by pulling on the blue 2x1 brick with holes.

As proof of the parts count I've included the LDD file, note the brick count is given as 112, this includes 3 spacemen figures who each count as 1 piece for the contest but LDD counts them as 5 each. So final count is actually:

Because this year the David's asked us to go back to classics (actually any official Lego Space colour scheme) I decided to go retro in a much heavier way than normal. I know I'm known more for transformers and mechs, but my earliest memories of Lego are actually building the official Classic Space sets so the swooshable was strong in me once upon a time.

The vehicle designs, particularly for the alternates are actually heavily inspired by my doodlings earlier this month doodlings earlier this month which failed to make the cut because it was too fragile to be effective as an actual set and there were engineering issues I couldn't be bothered working out... (actually I did but took no photos).

I'm happy with the shaping of the three skimmers, and it was fun messing with the rovers again, not done that in years. (Which reminds me, another TF Neo-CS Rover "may" be in the cards for Febrovery).

I've taken a look at the design as if it were made by someone else, so no favouritism and I've noted some possible issues that didn't occur to me at the time:

1. without wheels on the skimmer, if only one rover is deployed the vehicle would literally fall over. Also the vehicle is slightly back heavy with the wheels in the combined for quite far forward. This might make balancing the vehicle while rolling it around a problem.

2. There really isn't much of a change in function between the three builds. Beyond loosing the combination feature they basically do exactly the same thing.

3. I think I put the red and green lights on the wrong wings (again).

As always your comments, suggestions, critiques and ratings are welcome as feedback is almost always useful. Spam and abuse will be reported and deleted, this includes deliberate duplicate posting. Don't forget commenting without rating affects the overall rating scores, don't know why but it does.

Design: First, I have to say, those are the most determined looking spacemen Iíve ever seen. The fly and drop scenario competed with traditional CS design techniques looks great. (8) Alternatives: I like the fact that each of the alternatives create a set of builds, and with the three spacemen sets up some great play scenarios.(8) Playability: As I noted with the alternatives, the creation of groups of vehicles increases the play factor three-fold (8) Innovation: Pure CS, which of course I love, but where is the innovation? Ticks all of the old CS theme boxes! Three minifigs is quite a haul for a pocket money set too. I like the rover launching spaceship idea and the use of the modern handle bars for controls. 8 I really like the big spaceship in the first alternative and its accompanying eight wheeled rover. The second alternative is sort of the same again. Perhaps a small base or something would have added more variety? 6 One problem with LDD is that it can let builders make designs that work but are weak. Not this one. It looks rock solid for rolling and swooshing. I think that a real world version might suffer from centre of gravity problems when rolled though, with a lot of its weight being behind the rear axles. I also think that the 1x2 brick on each rover might stay attached to ship when the rover detaches or pins might stay in one but not the other. Using 2x1 bricks with 2 integral pins would help with this. BUT this set does look fun to play with. 6 I like the innovation of a small ship that can launch two buggies. Being able to include three minifigs in such a small set (and still have a good model) is quite an innovation too! 5 Total 25

I like the double pin method of keeping the rovers from spinning during flight.

Fantastic entry! Each alternate is just as awesome as the main build. I really love the skimmer from the first alternate group. Best of luck to you!

Very good job, Andros... I love all 3 builds. Can't go wrong with CS colors, either. Good luck in the contest!

Quoting Stephan N wow Andros, the ship with the two buggies is very cool. At best, it looks when the two vehicles are out. A really nice shape, has the ship. Both alternatives could just as well be the main model. Really good work my friend.
Thank you Stephan, I was going to wait till the deadline to post in order to give me more time to experiment, but with work piling up I had to post sooner than I wanted. Glad it turned out ok.
