2015 Jensen Interceptor 6.3
Welcome! This is my entry for the Remake An Old Car Contest - a modern interpretation of the Jensen Interceptor. Please let me know what you think!
About this creation
The classic Interceptor

The original, classic Interceptor was in fact the first mass produced car to have 4 wheel drive - yes, thats before the Audi Quattro by about 14 years! The Interceptor was made in England between 1966-1976; featuring various different V8s ranging from 6.3-7.2l the Interceptor was far ahead of it's time.

My design

This design actually has a little story to it - being a budding car designer, I am the sort of creative person who comes up with the best ideas spontaneously. When I began thinking about this rendition of the Interceptor, I was actually sitting in a Biology test! I finished my paper, checked it over and then began sketching the design on a piece of scrap paper. The original idea was to create a modern Interceptor with sleeker coupe lines rather than a big luxury GT. A few days after this, I was invited to the Remake An Old Car Contest - the perfect excuse to build my design in LEGO!

After a few different design variants, I began making the car in LEGO - as some of you may agree, your designs evolve most when you make them in LEGO as you realise some parts are not necessarily possible.

The most iconic feature of the original car was that huge rear window - that had to stay! The best way to see this model is by imagining the rear screen as I had to leave it like a big gap.

The original sketches gave the car a much lower, curved and coupe like roof line - however, I struggled to replicate this well in LEGO whilst including the rear window. I did manage to lower the car and give it more curves, though. Not only did I alter the roof line of the original car, but the waistline is actually curved too - on the original car, it was quite straight the whole way along, however my intentions were to give the car coupe-like hips.

If you didn't notice, I decided to give this car a panoramic sunroof. Aesthetically, I thought this would flow nicely into the rear window. As you can also see, I kept the original 2+2 seating arrangement. In most 2+2 cars, the back seats can feel confined and dark - however, the sunroof and rear window let light in to make it feel open and spacious.

Another original feature; the rear window opens to a big trunk.

For the interior of this car, I wanted to mix luxury and modern-contemporary design. I trimmed it with black carpets and beige/white padded leather seats and dashboard, all shaped in a modern/contemporary fashion.

I also gave the rear passengers some luxuries, with seperate air conditioning and controls.

Unlike the original car, only a small portion of the engine cover opens up - but it is what is underneath that matters!

Whilst designing this car, I thought about several engines - the original cars had massive V8s, and it had to be something realistic but good. In the end, I opted for Mercedes AMG's 6.3 M156 V8 engine as used in the Mercedes C63 AMG. I deemed this a realistic choice beacuse it is mass produced, and a lot of niche cars use German engines nowadays.

The AMG M156 engine, according to Mercedes AMG, is the worlds most powerful naturally-aspirated V8 engine, putting out over 500hp!

Thank you for taking the time to view this, please let me know your opinion!
Happy new year!

Quoting Henrik Jensen There is not much of the original Interceptor left, but I guess it was never the intention. But instead a cool new model looking really great, well done!

Quoting Yann (XY EZ) Well that's a surprise harry! Awesome car choice! Your model has some very nice design touches, especially the front! The overall creation is very well built. But I have some points of critisism; especially on the backs design. First, I don't have the 'shooting brake' feeling on your model, which I have when I see the real model. (this is because you haven't built the immense rear window like on the original one, I think). The second point of critisism are the back lights: the one on the real car are squarish, and not round as on your model. I would have tried to redesign/modernize these ones. But I forget all these little things when I see the front, which is by far the best 'front' you've done so far. Good luck, and greetings! ~Yann
Thanks Yann, I have an idea with the rear window for you, perhaps I should draw a line on one of the photos to see what it looks like with the shape of the window? It is there though, I just couldn't make the full shape with Lego.

Quoting Sam the first That's fantastic! Great work with the redesigning and keeping original features...wish I had the time to build a Large scale, my Quattro would be more...Quattro-y. But I love your model, the AMG engine is a great touch. Can't wait to see what 2015 holds!
Thanks Sam, I'm sure your entry will nevertheless be fantastic! Glad you like the AMG engine :) I'm looking forward to 2015, I got car show tickets for Christmas, it is in January!

Quoting Dennis B Hi Harry, this Jensen remake looks really awesome. It looks much more sporty and powerful than the original. I really like the front grill and the rear looks also very GT3ish with this huge difusor. Really a funny story that you sketched it during exams! It was worth for the car, but I hope you still received a good grade!
Haha thanks Dennis, I actually got an A in that exam! Trust me, work comes first right now - I wouldn't have spent time sketching if I didn't think I had done well :) Thanks again!
