Minifigure scaled Zeon MS-06F Zaku II with opening chest cockpit and fully poseable with multiple points of articulation.
About this creation
Introduced early during the One Year War as a replacement for the C-type Zaku II, the F-type is the most heavily mass-produced version of the Zaku II line and serves as the mainstay of the Zeon military. It's the F-type that is also the most well-known version of Zeon's mobile suit forces. Although fully capable of operating on Earth, the F-type is designed primarily for space combat (although the F-type does see limited use in Earth-based ground combat). A nearly identical variant of the F-type, the J-type, is designed and employed as a ground combat unit. The Midnight Fenrir team uses various F-types as scouts before Zeon's mass drop operations to invade North America. Many F-types survive the war and remain in service as part of Haman Karn's Neo Zeon forces during the First Neo Zeon War in UC 0088. These surviving F-types are upgraded with some of the latest technology, including 360 degree panoramic monitors in the cockpit.

This is my first attempt at a non-aircraft or Star Wars model. I've been a fan of Mobile Suit Gundam for many years, but had never attempted to recreate any mobile suits in LEGO form until now. I chose the Zaku II because even though it presents several particular challenges in its design, it's still an all around "grunt" mecha and has always been very aesthetically pleasing to me. My goal was to keep the model around 500 elements, but the finished product is closer to 1500. The size was necessitated by the desire to make the model somewhat minifigure-scaled, and the final model can seat a figure in the chest. I was also able to obtain near total articulation, with double jointed knees, ball jointed ankles, hips, shoulders, wrists, and thumbs, poseable fingers, and even articulated waist armor. The biggest challenge was the power cables, as LDD is still very lacking in the available selection and control of flexible elements. The physical model would have somewhat shorter leg cables, but overall the look would be mostly unchanged. If anyone would like to design a custom Zeon pilot or Char Aznable to include with this or my MS-06S, I would love to upload it to LEGO Ideas, although the size would probably preclude its chances of ever seeing production.
