Vintage Technic 857 : Motor Bike ( Sidecar ) reloaded
857 Motor Bike - The Vintage Technic Sidecar gets high-end suspensions all around, a big V-Twin engine. And some sporty looks alongside...
About this creation
Remember this fine set ? Not only it is from the classic era of Lego Technic, it's also a quite early one; 1979... Nowadays I own 2 (real) such outfits, among other bikes, and just enjoyed myself a lot rebuilding it. And mod it, quite a few...

[Find here the original model]

Features: mono-arm rear suspension, low handelbars, windshields, front suspension of constant-wheelbase type, articulated fuel tank, sidecar trunk beneath the spare wheel, clubman bike seat & better sidecar seat with headrest, twin headlamps, big V-Twin engine with classic era 4-studs square pistons...

While it looks definitely different, the fuel tank and sidecar pannier where not that much modified; as is the steering hub & chassis, almost untouched but for the swingarm of course... Indeed the pannier is a bit too close to the bike; one "wrong" part of the original design is corrected here: a sidecar wheel MUST be quite rearward, otherwise the outfit looses maneuverability.

Good view of the front suspension and its very specific monoshock setup where the front axle travels vertically, allowing the wheelbase to remain constant whatever the pressure you apply on the front - this is a real issue discussed in engineering motorbikes.

The Pannier gets a spring too, for sure. I fiddled a lot with this one, which is the sole "classic" element of suspension of this set, originally I planned for underneath spring but never achieved anything satisfactory in this department.

For you bike fanatics that want to see it without the third wheel:

Right-side of the engine, pannier removed: Good view of the V-Twin engine, which is functional & connected to the chain. Take a closer look & notice the unusual cylinder setup, being held in place nicely by the "pushrods". I used to have a two-wheel drive setup, but it prevented me from being able to put the rear mono-arm on the pannier side, which I absolutely wanted to give a more spectacular left view of the outfit & its "floating" left wheel. I may give it another go.

Your best glimpse of the mono-arm, re-enforced component with its off-axis shock absorber; the swingarm pivots on the same axis as the engine sprocket, eliminating the need for a tension chain absorber.

Thanks for the tips Lola. Very tempting - one of them has already been built (not by me) and is very tasty. Gotta fill mine with cars first! :-)

Excellent conversion to full suspension, looks as though it works brilliantly. Only suggestion would be - is it possible to move the axle of the sidecar wheel backward so it is in line with the rear wheel of the bike - or would that ruin the look ?

I remember this lovely set well. You've given it a much more complex and technic feel. I particularly like the way you've constructed the V-Twin engine block and changed the character of the bike. Great stuff.

Awesome, I remember this set, and wanting it as a kid so I could get the hard to find chain links. Suspension is tough to make work on a bike with old school technic components, I can appreciate your effort. Do you remember the red and yellow bikes with the high seat back from the back of the expert builder instruction booklets from that era? That would be a good one to augment with suspension too! Check out my technic bike if you get a chance!

It is important to add a hand to a base model. Wonderful JOB! PS:Thank you for the review to me. I'm sorry. I am not good at English.

This takes me back! I LOVE the old technic stuff; I can't get excited by the new sets. This sidecar is a great little model. Thanks for posting it!
