Landrover Defender 110 Long version with V6 and 4WD.
About this creation
Finally hereby the publishing of my last project the Landrover Defender 110 long version. Which in fact was not my initial plan! I started in Septeber 2014 with this project. My plan was to develop a 4WD chassis as small as possible, but with 3 differentials and a 4speed gearbox. Besides these first targets I planned to use Technic, Steering Arm 6 studs long (57515) and other parts belonging to this choice to have a steering turning point as close as possibe to the center of the wheel. This was to avoid a huge space needed for wheel turning.

However this was not satisfying I still considered the chassis to wide. Browsing the Lego Technic 2014 sets I run into this Technic, Steering Arm 5 studs long (15459) in the Lego Technic set 42021 the Snowmobile. So I bought this one immediately to try it out. This was successful action. This new piece really gives you the possibility to create small front wheel drive chassis.
This hurdle was taken. Not to forget to mention I wanted a fixed front and rear axle like in old all terrain vehicles.

All together the main chassis and the rear axle where easy to develop. After several iteration however I gave up on the 4speed gearbox. I couldn't get it small enough to fit in the chassis, bummer! I left in the 3rd differential anyway, to keep an option open for later power functions. Next was the engine. For this chassis a v8 was planned which I got fit in the front nicely.

Finally after several weeks the real challenge was at play the front axle. Where I decided not to use a center turning point to fix the axle to the chassis to ease the construction for the steering. A few weeks later and countless iterations, searching the internet for hints I managed to develop a small front axle with 2 flexible connections to the main chassis allowing for steering and power. There was one other feature I had to let go of and that was a turning steering wheel besides the HOG steering.

Finally the chassis was ready, now what!

In October/November 2014 I ran into a model from Dirtzone of a Defender. This coach work would fit the chassis perfectly, so I used roughly his design to give my

chassis some 'face' and fit it to my chassis. This seemed an easy job, but it took me the rest of December to make it fit properly. Fitting a piece of body work

another change I had to make. I didn't manage to keep the V8 so changed it to a V6 to allow some room for fixing the body work to the chassis. Now my project

started to get a 'face' I got some more other ideas to enrich this creation.
During the christmas holidays a Defender was driving by where I realized it had a white roof so I changed mine as well. Unfortunately no white pieces so settled for light grey which I just got by buying the set 9397 Logging Truck, I stumbled over a webshop still selling this set below the retail price. Besides that I decided to add a roof rack with some lights.

Wow, that's awesome, what a great Technic Landy! The axles are very clever and the body design with Technic parts is perfect. Great job! :-))

Excellent! I do like the narrow axles, great job done there, not an easy job at all! Just pitty you can't make them locking :-)

Excellent all the way around -- mechanicals, bodywork, write-up. I think sharing one's failures and dead-ends is every bit as important as sharing the successes. I encountered most of the same issues in trying to add motorized steering and independent suspension to the front end of the logging truck, which also has a narrow track. The snowmobile steering system didn't pan out for me, either -- largely because of the excessive play. I like your solution.

I love the technical accuracy of this and it's instantly recognisable as a Defender too (although the bonnet looks a bit too long). The only thing I'd change (besides the bonnet) is that V6 - maybe for Land Rover's TD5? Anyway, niggles aside, it's a 5 star MOC : ) 5/5

Technic at it's best! You've done well to squeeze in the functions in this relatively small model, and it looks superb.
