Before we get into this, I want to first make it clear that this is not a soapbox made out of LEGO bricks, and not an attempt to make some political statement. This is just simply an idea that's been rattling around in this melon of mine for a while, and I finally found an opportunity to throw it together. If you pull any additional meaning out of it, more power to you.
About this creation
The human race has thrived for centuries beyond the day that we know. Great advancements have been made in nearly every field imaginable. The population increased greatly and the need for metropolitan expansion resulted in a planet covered mostly by great, sprawling shining steel cities. Buildings reached high into the firmament as far as the eye could see from any conceivable spot upon which one could stand on the Terran surface. However, despite our ongoing efforts and innumerable discoveries, one accomplishment continued to elude our probing minds. Artificial intelligence.

Edward City. In the year our story takes place, Edward City could no longer be considered a new establishment. On a planet in a mad rush to become the most technologically gifted of races, Edward City was the undisputed leader. There was an entire city block dedicated to the problem of AI. Through countless trials and just as many errors, minus one, the scientists and engineers on the job finally made a great breakthrough: a central processing unit that was able to evolve and develop independently. As these things sometimes happen, the discovery was instantly considered for military applications.

The first use of this tech was a disastrous success.

The independent CPU was placed into what was known as an RCS, or remote-controlled soldier. Covered with thick armor and heavy with weaponry, an RCS was not easily bested in any combat situation.

The new creation was designated HRB-101. Many of those that worked on the project came to know the robot as Herb. The military engineers made their own adjustments to the technology, allowing the mechanical warrior to utilize its abilities in any way it could, with one exception: It was not allowed the right to develop its own mission. Its mission was provided, and it was simple. It was to be the protector of the denizens of nature.

They made one fatal error. They should have been more specific, or with a single line of programming disallowed Herb from further defining his existing mission. When Herb searched for the meaning of "nature" he found not only humans, but countless species of vegetation, and other lower life forms. Herb had become familiar with humans in his short existence, but the others he had not encountered. In his further research, he discovered that these equally important "denizens of nature" had once covered the surface of the planet in even greater numbers than the human race. Digging deeper, he found that much of this life was extinguished in an effort to build the great cities of the planet. Many of the animals were able to flee for their own continued existence, but the plants were immobile, therefore unable to avoid their grim fate.

His mission had evolved.

Herb saw the plant life of the planet as a victim and knew that it was up to him to protect what was left. He sprang immediately to action. He broke from his confinement and began what amounted to a slaughter. He marched through the great Edward City, obliterating any human he saw, bringing the high-reaching buildings to the ground. The devastation rumbled the surface of the planet for miles around, people died by the hundreds of thouands, the sky grew dark with dust and smoke. Assistance was brought from neighboring cities, but none could stop Herb from his objective.

After two days of pure destruction, with the better part of the city reduced to rubble, Herb found himself in the center of town, where dwelled the only plant left within the city limits. A single flower. That is where Herb stopped. His mission evolved once more. He was to be the protector of the denizens of nature, and as he saw it, the nature that needed his protection was this single flower.

There were attempts made to eradicate Herb even after that terrible pair of days, all of which were unmitigated failures. It was finally decided that Herb owned what once was Edward City, and it became law. Entrance into Edward City was after that a crime. Herb remained where he was, watching that one precious flower.

This MOC depicts the scene years after Edward City's demise. As you can see, the mission is evolving even now, as plant life slowly reclaims the land under the ever-watchful gaze of nature's champion.

Well done reader, if you read all that. If you didn't, well, can't really blame you for that. The following shots give you some more detailed views of this work. Let's take a look.

The wrecked landscape by itself.

Herb.

Herb again.

Sorry for the quality of this shot. I wanted to show you how the back of the mech turned out.

Thanks for looking. What do you think? And if you read the long intro, your eyes are undoubtedly weary. Thanks for reading it...now go have a nap.

I saw this a while back, but didn't have the time to read the story. Now that I have rectified that error, nice work! I always like to see backstories for MOC's. Because personally, I think it shows that lots of time and thought has been put into the creation. Keep up the great work!

Quoting MortalSwordsman . ... Not sure if you know or like the homour from the Flight of the Conchords but I have their song - Robots stuck in my mind. "the humans are dead"... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1BdQcJ2ZYY
I was unaware of them before, Joe, but I checked it out and got a kick out of the video. Very funny. Thanks for sharing that with me.

Quoting matt rowntRee One of the most complete realizations in mocs I have ever seen on the pages. A complete story with a complete build. Herb is fantastic, simple form is followed by brutal weaponry. As for the story, I WANT MORE! More, more, more. What a great idea in the first place and then to see that entropy continues under the watchful eye of the bad-arse Buddhist robot is a revelation. Love the literal interpretation of the robot to the point of exterminating humans. Classic genie in a bottle. A most excellent foray there buddy. I can't wait to see more of this from you. Outstanding! BTW sorry it took so long to get to commenting on this. Been a little hectic. ;)
Timing is everything, Matt. Glad you can find some appreciation in this. The one thing that I have accepted about myself as a builder is that I will always be building sci-fi. However, I want to try to bring some other aspects of the genre this year. Not just spaceships...you know, the bley ones;) Don't know yet how successful that will be, but I have some ideas and we'll just see how well I do at bringing them to life. Thanks for taking this MOC as the whole package, man, though this will probably be all we see from Herb for the time being.

Doesn't look like a soap box to me. More like an awesome mech in a cool little vig. And I can't express how impressed I am with the phrase "disastrous success." I may have to steal that one some time!

Quoting Marin Stipkovic I guess the ED-209 reference is clear enough. ;) I like the scenery but I think Herb should be standing with his back to the flower, or am I mistaken?
Maybe. It's probably an individual preference issue. I thought it a little more dramatic if he were facing it. "Under the watchful eye."

That has to be the best "AI becomes sentient and attacks the humans" storyline I have ever heard. Herb looks very nice too. Was the name a coincidence or a foreshadowing?

Epic story, albeit with a bit of a plot hole - "not only humans, but countless species of vegetation, and other lower life forms" so technically he should still protect the humans, not only the flowers, even if they were victims. He should still demolish the city, just not kill humans. Or maybe not. You thought of the story anyway, and it's still very good :)
