2015 MOCathalon Team Plastic Surgeons: John Carpenter's The Thing

About this creation
Plastic Surgeons
2015 MOCathalon
Some reference pics, they're all a little different. 1 , 2 , and 3 .

I chose a movie category! Go figure. ;)

Oh, but wait. Not just any movie, one of my all time favorites: John Carpenter's The Thing. The 1982 (god, what a great year for movies!) remake of the 1951 Howard Hawkes classic The Thing From Another World (which I ALSO highly recommend.)

I distinctly remember the movie posters (there were about a dozen or so) as they were very angular graphics with a simple silhouette. Very stylish, very mysterious, and very alluring. I've GOT to see this flick! And I was not disappointed. Of course, however, being an "R" rated movie, at eleven years old, I had to sneak in. Several times. A bit of criminal behavior was for a good cause. ;)

Anyways, I WILL NOT give away any plot points or fantastically quotable dialog, I will simply encourage you to see it. And gaze in wide eyed wonderment at what was the most epic beard in movie history! Kurt Russell for the win!

The following pics are of the overly complicated setup for that single shot.

And yes, it was VERY big.

Enjoy.

Had to start with the lettering as it HAD to be spot on distinctive. And if any of you are wondering what that picture is next to the wording, that is what was called a Laserdisc. It preceded DVDs and Blu rays and still has better sound.

I think I have the only working one left in Arizona. ;)

The whole enchilada. Well, actually there were no enchiladas as this has taken over the dining room table.

Crap, now I'm hungry.

Also UNDER the table. With glass underneath the build, I could shine a light from underneath and get the light blast from the silhouette's face.

My table is five feet square. Not sure what that is in meters, at least twenty. Gotta be. Curse you Imperial Standard!

Moah lettahs!

Moah white lettahs!

BTW this is 99.8% SNOT. The elements laid out everywhere are upside down. I don't know why, it just is! jeeesh.

And of course, the real gauge of the size of this "thing" (see what I did there?)

Fourth (more like fifth or sixth) wall: Firstly, awesome category judges. Thank you for letting me venture into one of my dream builds in Lego. And get paid for it! We get paid, right? Anyways, absolutely dauntingly fun. I built the letters first to get the font spot on, I died a little when I realized how big it had to be once I did that. Bah, what's a mild coronary in the grand scheme of things. Hehe, "things". I'll stop that.

Secondly, I want to thank the Plastic Surgeons for letting me continually ramble at them, it'll be a long month. Muahahaha. ;)

GO TEAM PLASTIC SURGEONS!!!

Thank you to everyone for stopping by again! I really enjoyed a bit of pride with this one as it still grabs my attention on my homepage. Seeing it as MOTD was another layer of icing (may need some insulin after this one.) Thank you!

Quoting Michael Rutherford King rowntRee. This MOC really does come right back and hit you between the eyes. I mean, I loved it the first time I saw it, but now seeing it again, it still floors me. It SEEMS so simple, but brother it aint! The size is astounding. The perfect work on the text builds. And the lighting is a perfect illustration of DELIBERATE and CREATIVE work. All that AND... IT LOOKS JUST LIKE THE DERN POSTER! You nailed it! One detail I missed before though, and I am now...compelled... to ask: What's with the crock pot on the chair? I mean... what was going on there? Dinner? Left overs? Going to a pot luck the next day? Where's the lid? You didn't break the lid did you? (Oh, and "the scale of the THING..." you slay me sir!) Attack!
Thank you again Michael, and that's actually one of those Ninja crock pots. They have an insert that was in the fridge containing something lovely the wifey threw together. We don't do potlucks, we hoard our food as I refuse to share. ;)

Quoting Tim C I commented on this, but apparently it didn't post. Not sure what happened, but I'm leaning toward user error. This is spectacular, Matt. A masterpiece even. When I first saw it, I didn't realize that this was LEGO, which is normally less of a compliment, but your subject matter makes that a significant statement. It's one thing to make a spaceship that "doesn't look like LEGO" but to create something that makes me think I'm looking at a marquis poster is something else entirely. When I realized that it was LEGO, I thought you had photoshopped the text in there. Then a closer look revealed that this is just a huge piece of work and not a single detail was overlooked. I couldn't have expected more from you, Matt. This may be the best MA work I've ever seen, and perhaps even your best. If you're going to take a break from what is promising to be a long-remembered SHIP, you have spent your time well. Can't wait to see what's next.
Thank you Tim! I think the problem with the post might be a bit too much Jameson's. XD The idea was to fool the eye with scale and technique, it has truly been the greatest pleasure seeing the responses say similar things about how they didn't realize it was Lego or that it was photoshopped in. When I was posting it, I was considering not posting any other shots of the set up but I think there was a greater impact with the realization that it was really one big monkey full of oddball techniques and photo trickery. ;)

Quoting J Stuart "If it's all the same to you gentleman, I'd rather not spend the rest of the winter....." I don't know if the full line considered is an eminently quotable quote, my lil brother is the only one I get my geek on with. It is my hands down favorite in this movie and makes my all time "Top Ten Unexpectedly Hilarious Movie Lines". Big points for the laser disc reference and mini bio. I had the pleasure to watch many amazing films in the format and I know where a copy of The Thing resides at this moment! Great memories. I think I'd love to break bread and relive the glorious 80s with ya bro. I'm a budding AFOL/MOC hack, so I was on looking for inspired builds. Got that AND a great trip down memory lane. I've honestly never met another diehard fan if the film, besides my little bro. We were too young to see at release, but Thing has a haowed place in our hearts. Thanks for this artisticly and technically inspired build. Kudos, karma, praise the Lord and pass the ammunition! Keep it real! PS SUGGEST YOU SEARCH " BARON HATS THE RJ" if you haven't seen it. Epic Macready repo of a legendary hat!
Thank you J! And welcome to this little corner of the Lego world. And yes, you are correct about the censors here, that particular line would not fly. ;) The movie is definitely in my top ten, and I'll check out the site for that brilliant hat. To this day I can't play computer chess or look at a bottle of JB without thinking of this movie. So wickedly memorable. In fact, it made such an impression that I am currently writing a book in which one of the characters is named Macready in memory of this movie and the character. And if you're looking for a true fanatic, you've definitely come to the right spot! Break bread, drink bear, down some JB; sounds like a Tuesday to me. XD Stop on by anytime.

Wow! If I hadn't seen the work in progress pictures, I never would have believed it was LEGO. The lettering is absolutely perfect. Great choice of subject, too. John Carpenter's "The Thing" is one of those rare movie re-makes that so completely outshines the original that you forget the original was ever made. Some great lines, too -- "I dunno what the hell's in there, but it's weird and pissed off"

King rowntRee... your majesty! What can one do but weep before such beauty! It's like the Sistine Chapel but without the religious overtones, and on your table instead of the ceiling, and... ok, it's not remotely like that chapel... but still it has lots of things that lousy little paint shed will never have. Stuff like John Carpenter, Kurt Russell, faceless guys in parkas, under-lit trans blue parts... all that and a bag of Chewbacca! Sniff. You are a merciless tyrant of skill and insight! Attack!

Quoting Clayton Marchetti Ok Brother! I was looking at this Thing and wondering, ok why did Matt take a picture of a movie poster, than I saw the other pics and realized this whole Thing was the lego creation. Wow! I'm blown away! The lettering is huge! Is this actual size or bigger? The effect of the light under the table is brilliant! Outstanding work Brother! You never cease to amaze!
Thank you Brother! THAT was the plan. ;) Funny thing was that I thought about just posting the pic of the finished product. Then I thought that all the setup shots would help prove that it wasn't photo edited as per the rules. Plus I figured it would help actually ground the viewer visually. Glad I did as I think the general consensus is the same. ;) And I believe standard movie poster size might actually be a bit smaller than this. XD

Quoting El Barto ! Laserdiscs RULE! And so does this poster. Better than the original. Darned clever lighting rig, too. But what's hanging on the wall above the table? Is it a Bigfoot cast?
I know, right!?! LD forever! Thank you Bart! And yes, it is the only proof of Chewbacca's/Bigfoot's existence. ;) I've gotta go, Batboy is hungry and scratching at the cellar door. XD

Quoting Cheryl P Awesome Build. I could expect no less from you. You have probably reduced you and Linda to eating off snack trays right in front of the TV. So 70's.
Thank you Cheryl! Yeah, all we need is some Swanson's TV dinners and maybe some Gorton's fish sticks if we're good. XD Gotta go, Starsky and Hutch is starting!

Quoting Delatron 3000 Perfect on both fonts brother, superb job! Did getting that super definition at both sizes determine the overall scale or did you always plan to go BIG? Good luck to you mate.
Thank you Stu! It was the "John Carpenter's" lettering that had to be there as it wouldn't be the same with just "The Thing". The shaping made them three studs wide and twelve bricks tall. Scale threw the title larger, MUCH larger than I originally intended. I thought I could get satisfactory definition at this thing being around two feet tall, three max. Nope. Built the words to match spot on then had to change building the refractions. The fur of the parka hood leaned in the direction of "larger than planned" too. I really need to take Locutus' advice and build micro. XD

Quoting Michael Rutherford King rowntRee... your majesty! Attack!
Thank you Mike! My work here is complete. :D I, of course, was playing to your own sensibilities. Not the JC/KR/faceless parka dude/trans blue ones but rather your perfectly descriptive take on the "paint shed". XDDD Can't stop laughing about that one and I must thank you again for that. I have to say that R.J. Macready has a special place in my heart. Not only that epic beard and the Jim Beam breakfast but also that awesome hat straight from Gabby Hayes. Pure unadulterated win on every level. We all kneel before that merciless tyrant of pure dudeness. Can I get a manly hallelujah?!? AMEN!

Quoting Grant W. Great looking poster. The lettering is so well incorporated that I had to do a double take to make sure it was LEGO lol. Seen the original version, but I will have to get around to the remake some time.
Thank you Grant! Double takes were my intention. ;) The original Howard Hawkes film is great but this one is completely different and amazingly well crafted. Didn't want to see the prequel that came out a few years back, just didn't care. I'd rather sit and watch this again anyways. ;) It's definitely more graphic and colorful with language, but worth every second. Enjoy!

Quoting Finn tegotash That is incredible! The letters are spot on!
Thank you Finn! Sadly enough, those were the easiest things about this. Really proud of the "N" and "G" as there are some really trick techniques there including top slope to top slope connection with a tile inside since there isn't an inverted 1X4 sloped brick.

Quoting Matt Bace Wow! If I hadn't seen the work in progress pictures, I never would have believed it was LEGO. The lettering is absolutely perfect. Great choice of subject, too. John Carpenter's "The Thing" is one of those rare movie re-makes that so completely outshines the original that you forget the original was ever made. Some great lines, too -- "I dunno what the hell's in there, but it's weird and pissed off"
Thank you Matt! AGREED on all counts there. Fantastic film and so utterly different than the original, which is still amazing in itself. And I have to say that the quote from Palmer when the head slides of the table and grows spider legs is one I say nearly every day. Except here on MP as it would NEVER pass the censors. ;)

Thank you Grant! And you should see it up close, it's even LESS impressive. I built for the primary shot so impression was the priority. But, then, that is the entire purpose of a movie poster; get 'em all to shell out ten bucks to sit for two hours. ;) Initial design of "building" the refractions was thrown out when the letters took to being THAT big and accurate. Always a compromise somewhere. ;)
