About this creation
Constructed in 1920, this 2-8-2 steam engine (known as a Mikado) was part of a 90-strong order from Zephyr Locomotive Works for use for freight duties in the flat prairies of the mid-western USA. These new engines were numbered 5827 through 5917, and replaced the under-powered and poorly-steaming 2-6-2's of around 1902. The larger engines were good at their work and remained in use until larger freight cars and longer trains caused them to be replaced as the major freight movers with delivery of the 2-10-4's in late 1938. The Mikado's are still used for lighter trains and sometimes are double-headed for longer trains when 2-10-4's are not available.
In real life, this engine is made up of four different models. This includes ScotNick1's 2-10-0 9F European steam engine, which was shortened to a 2-8-0. The second model is set 10194 Emerald Night, from which the rear truck was taken. The third model is Anthony Sava's Pacific 4-6-2 model and that comprises the inspiration for the tender. The boiler was inspired by the one in set 79111 Constitution Train Chase. Together, these different engines from four different eras and four separate builders come together to create this one steam engine.
