About this creation

I finally got this set, and it is better than I thought it was going to be, plus with some slight modifications, it is better than the original.

Climbing the good ol' tire mound. I was suprised by how many tires I have...

Upgrade #1, extra lights in the front. It looks better with two sets.

I had to add the other reciever for the lights so that they can be turned on and off. Originally they were hard wired into the power switch on the battery box.

The remote had to be upgraded too. Both sides are handy for different reasons. The variable remote is good for the lights, and winch which is on the other receiver too. Sometimes its nice to use the variable one for driving too.

And tail lights too. I had the extra lights, so I figured why not?

So the main problem with this model was that they put differentials in it. Differentials allow one wheel to spin while the other is stationary. They help with turning, but when you are trying to climb a rock or hill, they allow one wheel to spin when the other wheel has too much torque on it. This leads to slipping, and getting stuck. I didn't want my crawler to get stuck, but I didn't want to completely take out the differential... yet.. so I designed a diff locker. The purpose of a diff locker is to lock the differential on demand. Making the axle behave as if there were no differential in it. Above is a locked differential, and below is an unlocked one. The gray gears provide the solid axle and bypass the differential. This system is set up so that the diff lock slips out when too much torque is applied so that no gears strip. It does however have a higher tolerance level than the clutch gear, and provides sufficient amounts of torque before slipping.

A consequence of adding the difflocker was that I had to re-gear the drive a little bit. The crawler is a little faster now, but not very much.

Thanks for looking! expect to see more on this model, some high modifications are in it's future.

Excellent mod's will try it my self, personally I would go with a black chassis.

Quoting jds 7777 Awesome! How does performance compare to your Black Widow rock crawler?
It doesn't come close in crawling power. However the turning is better, and I do like the servo motor. It is way faster than the black widow, but it also has a lot of body roll.

It's quite amazing what this thing will clamber over isn't it ? I like the diff lock idea - simple and effective.

Quoting Nerds forprez Nice job....great modifications. But, I think when you say you made your model a little faster b/c of the gearing I think you meant slower. Looking at the gears that would slow your model down not speed it up. Although it would increase its torque.
It actually sped it up because I had to change the position of the tan and black gears to get the diff locks to work. So i compensated by changing those gears, but it is still slightly faster.
