Scallywag
About this creation
At long last.

These shots have been sitting on my hard drive for nearly six months just waiting to see the light of day. The Scallywag was originally part of an ambitious project taken on by several of the fine folks at Private Club. On October 1st, 2014, the project was proposed by Stephan Niehoff, eleven of us got on board with him with next to no hesitation, and the ball just started rolling from there.

The collaboration consisted of: Topsy Creatori, Starscream Soundwave, Locutus 666, Marc "Edge" R. unde, David Roberts, David Alexander Smith, Clayton Marchetti, Matt rowntRee, Tom Remy, Stephan Niehoff, Pico van Grootveld, and myself. Everyone stretched their abilities and brought forth some of the finest science fiction MOCs I've seen.

It was an honor to be able to work with this excellent group of people. Great builders and good people, all of them.

A few months later, after many discussions between all of us, amazing exchanges of ideas, insults grievously flung at me by Matt, and completely justified rebuttals from me, (what are friends for?), we all had our builds together and in the perfectly adept hands of Pico van Grootveld. A short time after that, Pico brought us this. If you haven't seen it yet, it's well worth the look.

This is the Scallywag, a Thondan pirate ship; my part of the collaboration.

Let's take a look.

Featured on BrickNerd.

My usual "stars blurred in the background to look like the spaceship is flying really fast" shot.

Guns a blazin'.

The rest are close-ups of some of the details of the ship.

I'm particularly pleased with this bit of detail.

Main engines.

Bonus shot: During a point that I was having trouble moving forward on the ship, I took some time out to build an unnecessarily elaborate stand. This is a shot to show you the unnecessarily elaborate stand.

Thanks for having a look! What do you think?

EPIC! I agree: Best Likely Design ( I most like the mainengine, midle-section, and the fins), Great Amount of Splendid Details, and Best Edited and Presentation! An oustanding Masterpiece of Master TIM!

Quoting M<0><0>DSWIM ! All I gotta say is, if this were my build, I wouldn't let pics of it sit on my desktop for 6 months. It's too awesome! Beautiful shaping and greebling/detailing throughout!
We were keeping all of our individual builds quiet until the collaboration was revealed. Holding these images was definitely killing me, but I'm glad to have it out in the world now. Thanks for the compliments, Kevin.

Always good to hear from you, Mark. Glad you like this one. BW 2016? Spirit of Fire? Throw a few back? Tell each other lies? What do you say?

Quoting Tirrell Brown Wonderful starship overall. It really reminds me of my favorite lego space set-Explorian Starship. My only quip is that I feel that the engine block doesn't match the rest of the ship. It's to squarish, and I felt that it could've been rounded out some more. Other than that excellent job.
I always welcome constructive criticism, especially from someone with your skills, Tirrell. What I was most concerned with was making the engines wider than the main body of the ship, which worked out pretty well. I would agree with you, though, that from behind it reads a bit boxy. Thanks for the compliments peppered around the advice!

Quoting Pieter Vanden Meersschaut Awesome job as usual Tim! I like the design a lot! Do you photoshop the pics yourself?
I use GIMP, but yeah, I do the work. Trust me, if I get rich enough to hire out the work, I may just do that some day;) Kidding, I love that part. A lot of the backgrounds I use are stock photos from the internet, but I create several from scratch just to keep it real. And, I must admit, I can't help but add a few embellishments to those stock photos. Thanks for the compliment!

Whoa! THE best? I'm tempted to leave some links here to show you some stuff that I think may edge mine out a bit...but, nah. I'll bask in the glory of your flattering comment. Thanks!

Quoting matt rowntRee Such a gloriously unnecessarily elaborate stand! XD Stunning work here, truly some top notch greebling, as expected, on a brilliantly designed behemoth of pain. Clayton's space cows don't stand a chance. XD Love the dentils along the struts and the fancy bit of detailing towards the main engines. Which, by the way, are appropriately beefy. Those angled winglets are just menacing enough to be piratey. Outstanding!
Really is all about that stand, isn't it? Thanks for the compliment, Matt. I can joke, but it was fun working with you on this one. The winglets were supposed to be a bit sail-like. Those are really what drew me to the reference photo to begin with. The thing just screamed, "Yo ho ho!" Glad you like it. Hope to work with you again in the future.

Quoting LukeClarenceVan The Revanchist Another incredible spaceship, I can't say I'm surprised given the builder. ;) Phenomenal work on this, an eclectic and ramshackle ship that still maintains an aggressive elegance of design. I've no idea how you didn't kill yourself editing the background out though - with all those pieces sticking out it must've taken forever to edit. Well worth it though, the photos are beautiful, showcases the ship perfectly.
Nice to hear from you, Luke. Glad you liked the ship. Yes, editing this one took a long time, but I've got a bit of practice doing it now, so it doesn't take me as long as it once did. Doesn't mean I don't tear my hair out once in a while. Word to the wise, if you're using GIMP, don't accidentally double click while your lassoing your subject. You'll consider going on a murder spree;) Thanks again, man. Can't wait to see what you have waiting in the wings for us.

Fantastic build! I love the use of color on this ship -- just the right amount of non-gray to highlight the shaping. The greebling is also very well done, but not overdone.

Quoting David Roberts Thank you too for the detailed back story about the collaborative build. It was quite astonishing when it appeared so quickly in the group!
Thanks for the compliments, David. The story was a lot of fun to write, and it surprised me as well with how quickly the words flew out of my fingers. I was a little afraid that the humor wouldn't be so well received, considering how seriously we took this project, but I was glad so much of it made the cut. You also played a pretty key role in that story. I really liked all the changes you made to my part, as well as the parts that you wrote. Top notch imagination you got there.

What a machine! A very different shape, obviously designed for deep space and packed with your usual detailed pieces of greebling. I like the angled wing pieces on top and your use of black with the grey on this build, especially on the neck to the front part. The time taken for the stand was well worthwhile. I've taken time away from a build to make a stand. It's a great way to do something useful for the model but totally different. A good change/rest for the brain.

Quoting Tyler Halliwell Really great ship, Tim. I love the menacing shape and simple colors befitting space pirates. Will we see you, and hopefully it, at Brickworld this year?
Unfortunately not, Tyler. I can't tell you how much I wish I was going this year, but my schedule didn't allow for it. Ireland drained my Tim-gets-to-have-fun-this-year fund and I unfortunately have to take the scenic route to 2016. If all goes as planned, I'll be there then. Thanks for the compliment. Have fun in Chi-town this year!

What a beast! She looks great from a long-range profile and up close. Quality from start to finish, I'm going to poor over the details for a while but I'm most struck with the general shape. You can see some influences but it retains an cool individuality. Kudos Tim.

I have to agree with Pico. This is your best ship so far. The greebles are absolutely gigantic. The many different sections of the ship I find particularly good. To me, this ship does not act like a typical pirate ship, it looks more like a battle cruiser of the Imperial Fleet. Because everything is very precise and elaborate on this vessel. I personally like the engine section especially. Top notch Tim, top notch
