Set 4954 House Alternate
That's right, I knew there was a reason I never make set alternates... because I suck at them.
About this creation
This is the result of my attempt at an alternate house using just the pieces from the 4954 Model Town House set -- a humbling experience, to say the least.

The 4954 set is a nice big one with lots of pieces, and I figured I could make a nice big house like the ones pictured on the box. I figured wrong.

In two failed attempts at a large house, I kept getting to a point where I needed pieces that just weren't there. Grrrr! Very frustrating. I decided to change tactics and make a smaller house in the Cafe Corner standard -- even a pseudo-talented hack like me can make a house with a square 16x16 footprint.

You only need to detail the front of a CC standard building. The sides have to be flat to press up against the other buildings. Oh, I absolutely admit it, I wussed out big time on this one. After I'm done uploading this I'll go back to hanging my head in shame.

There was still a ton of pieces left after making the house, so I managed to put together this little shed, garden, and wall. Whoopee.

Not quite enough to heal my wounded pride, but at least it's something.

True to a CC standard building, the back side is a big nothing, with a patch of different colored bricks there for absolutely no reason.

Also in the CC standard, the roof section does come off for interchanging modules, and the inside is bare. All right, the Cafe Corner and Market Street sets have stairs inside. Sue me.

All the pieces I still had left over after the house and shed. With one more baseplate to fill up, I did make a halfhearted attempt at another structure but gave up fairly quickly. There are parts to make a little blue car, but I didn't even try to make one. This alternate model stuff is just not my thing.

Here we have my CC standard modules in their natural habitat, surrounded by other buildings. Just imagine that some city workers tore up the sidewalk and went on their four-hour lunch break before coming back to repave.

If I tile up that sidewalk, it will make a fine addition to my future street scene.

Like I said before, even the lamest excuse for a builder should be able to make a bunch of interchangeable 16x16 boxes.

Okay, the truth is I don't hate this thing as much as I may have led you to believe. The house, if not the shed, will probably remain mostly intact in its current form and go into my Town street scene. I'm just depressed that I fell so far short of the mark I set for myself -- I wanted a worthy alternate that used up most of the set's pieces, a nice big impressive-looking house. Thoreau has a line in Walden, something about it being better to aim high and miss than to shoot low and hit your mark... but I am not consoled. I have brought shame on myself and my fellow Lego geeks. Please excuse me while I go commit seppuku.

This is not a bad alternate at all! Believe me, I know what I'm talking about. If you are not ashamed of it, could you please add it to my group? It would be a great addition!

Nice alt. but it looks like a barn with a color problem. Alts. are actually easy to me and with upload some very soon.

RAHV (that's French for lol). I agree with Emperor Ludgonious. Except I'd make four walls and an eyesore.

The only way I could make a alternate is if I made a junkyard. Build four walls and throw the rest of the bricks inside. You build this great little house. I'm not worthy...

No shame in this one, pal. Limited parts are beyond my tolerance, so hats off just for the attempt. As an artist, though, I understand your frustration...before I start, my painting's are ALWAYS a masterpiece, then each brush stroke after the first, is one more step away from the brilliance I'd's the same with Lego!

You have more willpower than I do; I would have to add some more parts to add some finishing touches. A great exercise in self-control. Lee.

Well done, Shannon, alts are hard, really hard. It's like an AFOL's nightmare - "What do you mean this is all I have to work with!"
