Hal struggled to walk, even with Wesley’s help. They had been walking nearly an hour, and the gas station was the first structure they had seen. Although it had clearly seen some conflict, they were relieved to see it.
Wesley’s skin crawled at the site of more dead bodies. Some aliens had already visited, leaving a wake of destruction in their path.
“Stop where you are!” a man from inside the gas station suddenly shouted, his gun pointed at the pair.
Wesley ducked behind the pillar as Hal fell to the ground behind a fallen gas pump, shouting out in pain as he hit the ground.
“We aren’t here to hurt you!” Wesley shouted, “We are humans.” He waited, but there was no response. Getting desperate and fearing an unfriendly response, Wesley decided to take a risk. “My friend was shot by one of the aliens. He needs help. There's got to be medicine in their to help him!”
Finally, after a moment, the man sighed and shouted back, “Bring him in here. I think I can help.”
Wesley stepped out from behind the pillar with his hands in the air, not making any sudden movements. He didn't want to give the man even the slightest reason to shoot him.
Hal crawled behind Wesley, groaning. He had already lost a great deal of blood.
“Who are you? Did any aliens follow you?” the man asked immediately. Another man was hidden behind a shelf. He said nothing, but he watched them with a fearful eye.
So he knows about the three.
“I’m Wesley, this is Hal,” Wesley responded. “Hal doesn’t have any of his three following him. We kill-” Wesley stopped suddenly, realizing that there was a young girl in the room, “We defeated two of mine and wounded the other badly. He won’t be bothering me for a while. Who are you, and what about your own?”
“I'm Jarrod, this is my daughter, Scarlett. We got rid of ours. One of them is on the ground outside. Bill hasn’t managed to kill a single one of his.”
The place was a mess. It looked as if it had been partially looted and then ravaged by a fight.
“You said you could help Hal. Can you?” Wesley asked, trying to get to the point. Hal wouldn’t make it much longer.
An alien watched from outside the store as the two humans conversed. Four humans. Three armed, one of which was injured.
“Yes, I’m actually a nurse. Or was,” he said, looking down. That was gone now. “Anyhow, I can help.”
“Thank you so much,” Wesley said, relieved. Realizing that he knew very little about medical emergencies, he said, “I’m going to see if I can get some supplies while you fix him.”
The alien called for backup as he watched. Five humans, but one was a child. All in all, two healthy, armed humans. He would only need a few other soldiers for backup.
Jarrod began to clean out and stitch up Hal’s wound as Wesley searched for useful supplies. Less than an hour later, he was done. It wasn't the best repair he had ever done, but it was enough to save Hal's life.
“You requested backup?” the alien said to his companion.
“Yes. Two more are on their way, but we’ll initiate without them.”
The two aliens charged the gas station, guns firing.
Wesley jumped behind the wall just as a bullet screamed past and hit the concrete wall behind him.
The nurse jumped behind the counter as Hal crawled to safety, briefly forgetting his pain.
There was a split second of silence before all hell broke loose.
The two aliens entered the store through different entrances, the door and a smashed window.
Just before Wesley had the chance to pull the trigger, the alien grabbed his gun, sending a bullet into the ceiling.
Jarrod shot the first one in the chest multiple times as the second one entered in behind him.
Another followed behind him.
Hal crawled out from his cover and fired at the two aliens entering the store.
Wesley and one of the aliens were engaged in a ruthless wrestle to gain control of the weapons.
Hal shot at the third alien, but not before he let several bullets fly, two of which hit Jarrod in the chest.
Finally, Wesley and the alien suddenly tugged themselves free, each holding the other’s weapon. Wesley had the gun in a better position and quickly fired off two shots, killing the alien with his own weapon.
Hal stood up, using all his strength, and shot out the door at the final alien.
The alien was just taking aim as Hal shot him, but he had just enough time to get off a final shot.
A deadly final shot.
The three humans remaining stood in shocked silence. Hal hadn’t been able to save either man, Wesley had killed his first alien, and Scarlett had just lost her father.
“I should have been quicker,” Hal finally said, breaking the silence.
No one replied.
“We’ve got to get out of here before more backup gets here.”
Never had so much had happened in so little time. Four dead aliens. Three surviving humans. Two dead humans. One orphan.
Where will Hal, Wesley, and Scarlett go now? Where are the other humans who are still alive going?
