Romanian TR-85M1 Main Battle Tank
hello! I'm back after a log time with another MOC! It's digital again, and this time it's a more modern tank than my usual WW2 designs.
About this creation
The TR-85 is a main battle tank designed for the armed forces of Romania. Based on the TR-77-580 (Romanian-built version of the Soviet T-55 tank), the TR-85 tank was developed from 1978 to 1985 and produced from 1986 until 1990. A modernization program was initiated in March 1994 in order to upgrade the TR-85 tanks to NATO standards. The result was the TR-85M1 main battle tank, currently the most modern tank in service with the Romanian Land Forces. Although a further development of the T-55, the TR-85M1 uses a T-block powerpack (similar to the one used in the Leopard 1) based on a V8 German 830 hp diesel engine, an improved turret, a locally-designed "Ciclop" fire control system (with cross-wind sensor, laser rangefinder and night vision), new 100 mm BM-412 Sg APFSDS-T projectiles and a completely redesigned suspension with 6 road wheels on each side. Combat weight is 50 tons.

here's a reference image of the tank itself. Wikipedia has more on that.

here are some renders of the tank. It has functioning suspension on each roadwheel, but apart from that not that many play features.

I recorded the whole designing process again, so you can watch it here. LDD model is also available for download for personal use only, of course.

I hope you like it, feel free to comment and rate (the video as well!!)

So you're branching into MBTs, interesting. Do you know of/have you played Armored Warfare? (Kind of like World of Tanks, but with modern vehicles) If so, what do you think of it? Also, do you plan on building another tank, or are you working on one now?

Quoting psyco gummie bear So where is the LDD download for this hiding or have you defaulted to giving that out via email or something? I love your models and have actually built your T29 and Pershing.(I LOVE THEM!!!)
Haha no sorry I totally forgot to add the file. I added it now, but I must request you post pictures of the T29 and Pershing :)

Awesome! Very accurate looking, with very nice details. Nice video too, interesting to follow the design process and see how you built the suspension for the road wheels. Great work :-)

Very nicely done. Doesn't matter if there is much play value, this is a great shelf item. Pretty good job on the tracks and suspension, and the details are excellent. :-)

Very nice tank! I always try to make a tank with my NXT:) hard to make it look good..... No page made of it (only of a sub) 1 thing: you said a 'big gun/missile'100mm. This is compared to the M1A2, Armata and Leopard 2 not very big, they have 122mm or more.

Quoting Sam the First A beautiful model Alex! Really nice techniques, it just looks gorgeous! May I ask, how do you make the bricks on your LDD have shadows and look...well, nice? When watching the video, I noticed the bricks were generally higher quality - how and why!? :D
Thanks, and I pushed a lot of advanced settings to LDD via my graphic card driver. Also, LDD has "preferences".

Quoting Jesse Long Wow, that's a nice tank, Alex. You should really check out Daniel Siskind's website called Brickworks. He would love to have your vehicle put in his shop. You did a nice job with your tank.
You mean Brickmania? I don't know. I haven't contacted him yet.

Quoting Henrik Jensen Wow, this looks to be very accurate! The rounded front of the turret is really amazing. Excellent Work!
hahaha thanks, but the rounded turret front are literally two bricks :P Although I picked and used those bricks, so kudos to me.
Quoting Matt Bace Very nice! ... One question, though, If you were to build it with real bricks, how would you keep the tubes that hold the ammo boxes on the sides of the turret bent? Insert some metal wire, perhaps?
Yep, metal wire, it's actually used quite a lot, I know a few builders on Flickr use it.

Quoting killswitch95 [RELSH] DARN IT, i make a whole family of russian tanks, then BOOM you, and sariel post awesome posts and im just over here like... i had it, i had the light, now im back behind the greats again... eh, but on to the build, great as always, though if the turret and gun moves, those are playable features, the main question is, is it sturdy?
What about when the greats retire :P And yeah, it should be quite sturdy, the turret maybe a bit more than the hull front, but otherwise if you built it it would stay together. It's evident in the video.

Very nice! I particularly like the shaping of the turret on this one. Watching the video of the design process is very interesting, too -- it's always good to see how other builders solve problems. One question, though, If you were to build it with real bricks, how would you keep the tubes that hold the ammo boxes on the sides of the turret bent? Insert some metal wire, perhaps?
