From the war torn world of Decisive Action 2: Up From the Ashes.
About this creation

(Night slowly falls over the city of Nullius, the city lights illuminating its surroundings. In the center of the sprawling metropolis lies the palace mansion of Darius Bane, High Commander of the Imperial Federation of the Wolf. Darius is currently reading in a secluded part of the palace’s gardens, words consuming his thoughts. He is interrupted by Yvette Bolton, leader of the IFW Ground Forces.)

Yvette: Everything alright sir?

Darius: Hmm? Yes Yvette. Everything is fine. I just…come here to be alone sometimes. In amongst this world of chaos, a little thinking time doesn’t go astray.

Yvette: Of course not sir. Thinking, after all, is the talking of the soul with itself.

Darius: Plato Yvette? I didn’t know you took an interest in the classics?

Yvette: Believe me sir, there’s a lot you don’t know about me.

Darius: I’ve got time. Any distraction from this war is welcome. And drop this sir nonsense, no one else is around, and I like hearing others use my name. It makes a welcome change from ‘sir’ or ‘lord’.

Yvette: Well…Darius…I have done a lot of things in my life, but speaking of them is not one of them.

Darius: One thing that comes with this job is keeping secrets. So many plots have come my way, so many underhand tactics, alliances and tragedies. But if you wish to keep your past to yourself, I won’t force you.

Yvette: Probably for the best. Well…I’ll get going then…

Darius: No, please. Stay. I…I need to talk to someone. Not those bureaucrats or politicians, but a soldier, like you. Please, I…I won’t take long.

Yvette: Um…alright. What do you want to ask?

Darius: Am I doing the right thing for this nation?

Yvette: Si-Darius?

Darius: You heard. Is what I’m doing right? This nation I built, this nation I founded, am I leading it in the right way? With all the war in this world, I need to be strong, but…I want them to see me as a person. I want those people to follow me because what I’m doing is right, not because I’m just strong.

Yvette: If you want my opinion sir, I think you’re doing an amazing job. You’ve somehow kept this nation together in a land filled with dust and drought. You’ve kept all those people confident even though we’re being beaten back by the Sovereignty. Not many other national leaders would be able to hold us together like that.

Darius: But at what cost? How many nations have I crushed underneath my boot just to gain a little bit more power? Do you remember General Useless? Gone, wiped from the earth. Even now troops are marching on what remains of the Carnival. All for a few more kilometers of rock!

Yvette: As a warrior yourself, you have to see that sacrifices are necessary. Without that rock, we would have been killed long ago.

Darius: Do you know I met him once?

Yvette: Who?

Darius: Andy Circus. It was in the days of Magistrate Mojo, at the grand opening of the World Court. Beneath that make up and red nose, he was a good man. All he wanted was to run his nation the best he could, that was all. And now he’s almost a forgotten memory. Lost to the sands of time.

Yvette: Well…so would we if you hadn’t acted like you did.

Darius: Listen Yvette, that’s just it. It didn’t have to be this way. Remember how the Carnival severed their trade links to us? It wasn’t an act of aggression, but merely a last ditch effort of salvation. The man knew what was coming. He…he sent me a letter, saying he would return his trade if we left him alone, if we stopped advancing. It was a cry for help…He didn’t want it to end. But I chose to continue the advancement. What else could I logically do? Leisure and Extium have us pinned from the north, and the Sovereignty’s forcing us from the south. The Hammer had already been sent and the troops already marching. Logically I couldn’t do anything.

Darius: But morally? If I gave my word, if I really wanted to I could’ve stopped it. The death, the destruction, those poor soldiers… I’ll do anything to protect my people, but what about theirs? What about the thousands that had to die so my people had to live? When did I become like a dictator, judging my own people above others? Why!? I can’t sleep. Those screams fill my head, unending cries of why us, why us. And that wolf? My arm aches every night, that wolf accompanying every scream.

Darius: I deemed by own life more worthy that the wolf’s and so I killed it. But it has had the last laugh. In the end, madness is the only victor.

Yvette: …You can’t give in now.

Darius: Why? It seems that’s all I can do. My whole life has been a lie. I preach protection but kill innocents. If I stepped down, maybe it would stop. Maybe it would finally stop.

Yvette: Darius, you have no idea! You think just because you’ve had to sacrifice others to save your people makes you a lie? No, you are the only reason those people have a life to call their own!

(Her eyes burst into tears, which stream down her face.)

Yvette: If you want a hard life, try growing up in a country ruled by a dictator! Try trying to live in a place where your parents were blown apart because they didn’t believe in what the government preached!

Yvette: Try learning how to fight on the streets, your only protection a dagger you stole from a dead man’s jacket! Do you even know how I came to be here, in this country? I stowed away on a freighter, no clean food for weeks, my only meal the scraps left for the birds!

Yvette: But it was you! You stood up for me when all others threw me down. You gave me the chance to prove myself. You, who supported me and this nation through all the hardships this world brings. So if you give up, lay down your claws, that hope will be lost. If you want my honest opinion, you’re failing as a leader, because you don’t believe in yourself. Not every one of your decisions will help everyone and almost none of them will be easy. But every one you make will be saving this nation. And if I can go from a street orphan to a General, you can certainly go from a leader to a legend. Believe me, Darius Bane, you won’t ever be forgotten.

Darius:…Thank you. Thank you so much Yvette. You have no idea how much that means to me.

(Tears slowly fill Darius’ eyes until they begin to drip down his cheeks. Yvette gently grabs his shoulder and pulls him into a hug.)

Yvette: I know leading a nation isn’t easy. But know that you don’t have to go through this alone. In times when I’m at my lowest, I like to remember this poem.

‘Let not your heart be weary, let not your courage sway
Let not your eyes be teary, at the close of day.
For every dusk and every dawn, brings forth hope anew
Dwell not on your failings, but on how much you grew’

Darius: That’s…that’s beautiful. Who wrote it?

Yvette: I did. After I saw you enjoyed poetry, I kind of started myself.

Darius: You have a real gift Yvette. Don’t waste it.

(Yvette releases the hug and smiles softly back at Darius.)

Yvette: I’ll try not to. And if you ever need someone to talk too, you know where to find me.

Darius: Thank you again Yvette. I…I guess I’ll see you around?

Yvette: I’d like that. Goodnight Darius.

(Yvette walks back toward the palace, a subtle smile on her face. Darius turns and looks at the tree, its many branches growing and twisting in an almost impossible pattern.)

Darius: Such an amazing woman…. an amazing woman, indeed.

(The full moon begins to rise over the city, illuminating the landscape in a soft, white light. Who knows what tomorrow will hold?)

Forth Wall Break:
So this creation is built in the universe of the war game Decisive Action 2: Up From the Ashes. This creation is not for any military power in the game, but more so to expand the characters that inhabit this world at war. Thanks to everyone for all of the support for the IFW during this game, I really do appreciate it.

Attention in the Ready Room…The rules for the third iteration of Decisive Action have just been posted in the DA3 Ready Room. We built the Ready Room so motivated competitors could study the DA3 rules and gain understanding before the game begins on 7 April 2018. Well, the rules are now posted. So report to the Ready Room. Get the information, get your head in the game, and above all… get ready. Build! Post! Review! Attack! This is Decisive Action.

Ooops, my bad. Its right there. The length of the link put it down on line from the name of the category. Back to quoting Plato in the park then...

Finally a MOC I can give some smileys too. Unlike Rutherford, I appreciate the effort and all the references. It's very gratifying that DA can inspire builds outside the immediate context of the game. Cheers!

Commander Warewolff. Darius needs to focus less on Plato and moments of deep feeling, and more on filling the helicopter slot on his ORBAT. He may think he needs a hug, but the burden of national leadership will be lifted from his shoulders soon enough...

A lovely piece of writing, and nice build. Good to see a non combat DA MOC. Also, I've left you a message in the usual place. Hope you can do me a favour.

Thanks for the constructive criticism Michael. Not quite sure what you mean by filling the helicopter slot; it's already been filled (Check out the Steelwing Helicopter).

Quoting Stuart Lucas Lovely piece of writing. Great to see you expanding the DA world and the mythology of it!
Thanks Stuart! I'm really enjoying the sheer diversity of characters in this game. Pirates are fighting with spacemen, clowns, ninjas and a literal realm of random things! Who wouldn't want to expand it?

Quoting VAkkron ™ Very nicely done. The setting is serene for such a heavy topic. I like your thought perspective, too. Keep making good decisions!
Thanks VA! I always picture people reciting poetry or thinking heavy thoughts outside somewhere, usually next to a tree.
