Mystic Isle (2)

LOM: Mystic Isle

August 7, 7 AU

The pain is gone.

I awake to find myself lying on a rough, rocky surface. I was correct then; I did not truly die. Dying in the other world really was what I had to do to return to the real world.

But all the same, the pain felt so real. Though I know that it's gone, I can still almost feel it surging through my veins. My body aches, and this is a real sensation, the product of being unconscious in this world for over a month. I know that it is already early August, assuming that time in this world matches time in the illusion world, and it was at the end of June when I was sent to the other world.

I sit up slowly and watch as a man - Halbert - approaches me.

LOM: Mystic Isle

"Elisa," he says softly. "You're back."

I stare at him, confused. He had said he was still in Deer Village, last time I talked to him. "What the hell are you doing here?"

"I'm sorry, Elisa. I should have told you. You see, you and Frederick aren't Gremlon's only students. Ever since he learned of my connection to the Boss, we've been working together, planning this. I wish I could have warned you what was going to happen, but I couldn't. He wouldn't let me."

What was going to happen? To what? "What do you mean?"

"Elisa, there's a reason you and Frederick were knocked unconscious for over a month. You two have presumably already discovered that you were supposed to meet each other, but that's not the reason. Nor was it just to bring you here to safety; you could have done that if you were conscious, too.

"The real reason is that you are too selfless. You don't value your life over others' in the same selfish way that others do. And while that can be a good thing at times, here it would have interfered with Gremlon's plans.

"You see, the Boss took advantage of the chaos in Santuario to rise to power, and Gremlon alone knew how to orchestrate his demise. So he went to confront the Boss and set up a trap for him, knowing that he would be killed in the process.

"Gremlon died, Elisa. I'm so sorry."

I shake my head, staring at the ground, trying to hold back tears. It's not Gremlon that I need. It's his plans, his constant knowledge of what needs to be done. Without that, we've lost.

"He had a plan, Elisa. This was part of it. We need to return to Santuario; the Boss is there now, and with the trap that Gremlon set up for him, there's a chance that we can stop him."

I mumble incoherently, unconvinced.

"But we have to go now. Every minute we stand here is another minute we waste while more people join the Boss. If we're going to stop him, we need to go now."

I raise my head up and nod. "And Frederick?"

"He's staying behind here. If we do succeed in killing the Boss, we'll never have peace; there'll always be another of his henchmen, trying to kill us. We'll need to start over."

"Start over?"

"Frederick is working on creating new identities and new lives for us. It will be hard to transition, but we'll have to become different people if we want to survive."

"But what about the lives we have right now?"

Halbert can't meet my eyes. "It's a sacrifice we'll have to make. I've already informed Abelot of our plans; he was reluctant to accept it at first, but he agrees that it's all for the best."

I want Halbert to be wrong, but I know he's telling the truth. If we don't follow his plan, it's not just our lives that would be in danger; our families, too, would be targets. If we can fake our deaths and start over, only then can our families be safe too.

LOM: Mystic Isle

"Let's go, then."

August 31, 7 AU

Tharnham Castle

Gavon slowly steps toward the Boss. "We meet again," he says softly.

"Indeed, it is so," Marshall replies. "Leading the Seeds of Revolution has made me...busy. It is a shame that we have not been able to work more closely together as we have in the past."

"We could have," Gavon notes. "The Seeds seek to promote unity, the power of the common man, the lack of control by the wealthy.... Would it not be a fitting symbol to have a lowly innkeeper as one of the leaders?"

"Innkeeper?" The Boss chuckles. "Clever. So you'd hide the fact that you're really a wizard from them? Lying to the people about your identity may bring about the ends you want, but it really isn't the best tactic."

"Funny to hear you say that, 'Marechal'. That's the name that you go by to the revolutionaries, is it not? Hiding your old identity - William Marshall - from the people, because you're too ashamed to admit that you're a Mythronian. Hiding your most famous identity - The Boss - from them, because you think that lying to them will make them trust you.

"Now, I have a question for you. What will you tell the people if they ask where all their money and property goes?" The Boss begins to speak, but Gavon cuts him off. "I already know what you'd say: you'd claim that the supplies are being distributed to our members evenly. And it is true, you are giving them some of the supplies.

"But how is it that the average wealth of our members is lower than it was before the redistribution? Why is it that countless supplies disappeared from the records?

"A few days ago, Donjnir gave me the information I needed to confirm my suspicions. That redistribution plan of yours is a lie. The only redistribution going on is the transfer of the people's possessions to you.

"You didn't found the Seeds of Revolution to bring new opportunities to the oppressed, like you claimed. All of this was a plot of yours to bring yourself wealth at the expense of others.

"That's why you've cut off contact with me. It isn't because you're too busy. It's because you're afraid of me; afraid that I might find out what you're doing with the people's supplies; afraid of me telling the people about your plans; afraid of yourself losing the power that you've built for yourself.

"I remember when I joined you, years ago. Somehow, I believed you. I believed that your goal was to bring prosperity to the lower classes of society. I believed that the people that you killed were greedy villains, trying to take power away from the common people. I believed everything.

"But I was wrong. That never was your goal, was it? For you, all of this was just a convenient way to gain wealth and power for yourself. Those people you killed - they weren't villains. They were old rivals of yours, or people who discovered your true plans before even I could.

"Darden - he wasn't the aristocratic reprobate that you portrayed him to be, was he? No, he was a man who got too close to your plans. He found out about your economic intentions and intended to go to Bodus Minor, our former headquarters, in hopes of inciting a rebellion against you. But you learned of this, and ordered for us to kill him. All because he tried to reveal the truth.

"I've had to go against my conscience numerous times under your command. Murder, torture, theft...But it ends now. I refuse to help you anymore. I am done.

"Of course, the revolutionaries must know why I will no longer be with them. So I will tell them. They deserve to know that they have been lied to. They deserve to know why they have become impoverished upon their entry into our faction. They deserve to know what you've done to them.

"Let's see, then, if any will still follow you."

Tharnham Castle

The Boss stares at Gavon menacingly. "For all your discoveries, my boy, you are still so ignorant. Did you really think that I would allow you to reveal my plans to the group?" He pulls out his sword, dangling it in front of Gavon's face. "It doesn't matter that you've discovered my secrets. I can dispose of you, just as I disposed of Darden. And as you've so kindly informed me of your source of information," he adds, "I suppose I can have Donjnir killed as well. You have been a loyal servant for so long, Gavon, but your time must come to an end."

There is a flash of silver through the air, the sound of metal slicing through flesh. Blood drips down to the ground, as the man collapses, dead.

Tharnham Castle

Halbert removes his sword from the limp body of the Boss as I emerge from my hiding place and walk toward Gavon. "You need to leave," I say urgently. "The Boss has accomplices that will be here any minute. If they find out that you opposed him, you'll be dead within the hour." Gavon begins to walk away, nodding.

Tharnham Castle

"So what was it that Gremlon did?"

Halbert looks up. "It wasn't just a coincidence that Donjnir and Gavon discovered what they did about the Boss. Gremlon left some important documents in places where he knew they'd find them, all in the hopes that they'd discover what was going on."

I smile. "Gremlon planted the Seed, and Gavon launched the Revolution."

"And I...."

"You saved the Revolutionary," I respond. "In taking the life of a tyrant, you saved a hero. You were the true hero, Halbert." He looks at me and winks. "Oh, right, 'John'".

We both laugh for a few moments, but the reality sinks in again. "It's all for the better, leaving our current lives."

He sighs. "I know, Elisa. But that doesn't make it any easier to leave all of this behind."

I nod, thinking about my family in Deer Forest. "We can rebuild this eventually. It's not just that we're ending our old lives." I grasp his hand as we begin to walk away. "We're starting a new one."

This episode marks the end of my storyline with the Boss, Halbert, Elisa, and all the others. When I switch to Mythron to become faction leader, I'm going to have an entirely new cast of characters. I believe I might be the first person in the group to actually finish their story (I can't tell whether or not Asad did, since I lost track of which Spine was which and how many of them were dead and such). Oh, and this episode was sort of a crossover with Joseph; I believe he'll be posting his part in a flashback next month.

Tharnham Castle

The second scene, Tharnham Castle, was a quick MOC built in about half a day. I wasted far too much time trying to decide what to build, so I had to rush this a lot, meaning that I'm not entirely satisfied with it (although the stonework would look way better without the round tiles). My original plan was to have 4 scenes for this MOC, but I had to cut two of them because of time constraints.

Mystic Isle (3)

I'm really happy with how the main scene, Mystic Isle, turned out. I've been wanting to do more blue landscaping, and this MOC gave me the perfect opportunity to do so. I also experimented with dark brown timber, which isn't very practical for me normally because of my small collection of dark brown, but it was (barely) enough to do this.

I especially liked the layout of the MOC, with the dock (technique stolen from Grant Davis) stretching out on the side. It's vaguely inspired by Gilbert's "Bloodless Victory"....which, come to think of it, might have been inspired by my "Pursuit", given the timing of the post and the similarities in layout between the two MOCs.

Finally, the window frames are new for me, and required some tricky SNOTwork (it's not easy to get all the correct offsets while maintaining a good texture).

Some people may not like the loose-piece, non-blue water, but I like it personally. There's reasons for both of those: it's loose pieces because the rock shaping means that fully-connected water wouldn't work out that well without using a bunch of trans-clear tiles (of which I do have some, but probably not enough). And the water isn't blue because that would look weird next to the blue landscaping.

Mystic Isle (5)

Mystic Isle (6)

It was quite a challenge to get all the rocks to flow as smoothly as possible while minimizing gaps, but for the most part I managed to avoid gaps fairly well.

Quoting Hadden Kurtz Awesome job Halhi 141! Looks awesome! One question, how do you build it where it looks like it is leaning in on itself? Thanks so much for posting in the group!
Just some hinge bricks to hinge the stonework: https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=3937c01 I have some behind the scenes pictures of a few of my most complex MOCs on Flickr, if you're interested: https://m.flickr.com/#/photos/halhi141/sets/72157660681630624/

Quoting Halhi 141 My new storyline will be shorter, better, and more thought-out :P
And, from the looks of things, pretty much nonexistent...sigh. It's kinda a shame, because I had really liked the premise of it and the parts that I had written turned out well, I just never got around to writing Cliffside Village because I was having some troubles there, and after that I never got caught up...I guess I only have like 2-3 more episodes to catch up on, so maybe I'll try to do that eventually...

Quoting ~TheLego Creator ~ You could have done blue water by putting a ring of clear brick as surf with the blue outside. Just a suggestion! Still looks great :-)!

Quoting LegoPredator ! I like that house a lot, the texture looks great as always. Also the rockwork is awesome, only I don´t understand why you used blue pieces for landscaping.
Yay, late replies! The blue was for a cold, surreal look -green is too bright/natural looking for the mood I was going for.

Quoting Armon Russ Is the Boss wearing a dress now? :P Anywhooo . . . as said before, this is really, really fantastic. Love the blue and all the textures. That second build with the wall is very nice, as well. As for your series finale, well, I suppose it tied up the loose ends on what the Boss's plans were and whatever, but I was just wondering . . . Why exactly did Elisa not run away sobbing from Halbert this time? ;P
No :P Those tourney builds had super-rushed stories that characterized my characters terribly. If you're actually interested in legitimately reading my story, you could probably start at Forbidden Castle without missing much (that was when my stories started to get better IMO). I'm too lazy to rewrite my earlier stories, but they were a mess; I introduced random plot twists with absolutely zero planning ahead, and I've had to try to tie up way too many loose ends (there's still a few that I haven't explicitely addressed, but whatever). My new storyline will be shorter, better, and more thought-out :P

Halhi, in even your smallest creations you include a truly impressive amount of detail. The techniques packed into this are incredible - from the tilted walls to the complex landscaping you have every brick perfectly placed. Love the blue colour scheme as well, very eye-catching! If you don't mind my asking, would you be willing to do me a favour? Usually I wouldn't try to solicit 'likes,' but if you could like as many of my most recent creations as possibly, it would be of great assistance for a game I'm in. I'd owe you one for sure. Actually, I'd probably owe you a few! Definitely checking out LOM after the current game ends as well. Again, terrific build! Can't wait to see how your techniques continue to evolve in future creations.

Quoting Graeme Straughn I agree with Deus, only that this is fantastic. For the 1st time in a while, I actually went through and really read the story thoroughly- it was great. You have great characters and I can't wait to see where you go with them. As for the build, even if it was similar to your last like 3 or so, it was very well done. That dock/bridge looks perfect and the panel rockwork is spot on. Overall, this is one great build and story- I'm looking forward to more!
I'm glad you liked the story! This, however, is actually the conclusion of my story with them; I've finally wrapped up all the loose ends (or, well, most of them), and I'm going to move on to a new cast when I switch to Mythron.

For people who are commenting about how this is similar to all my other stuff - have you been keeping track of my builds lately? Take a look at all my builds since March - I've only done one other traditional building (Parting Ways, which is sorta similar to this architecturally), plus a few castles, a couple treehouses, and other stuff ranging from ships to dragons to towers to landscapes. I do build different stuff a lot of the time, I think it's just that the buildings are the more memorable MOCs ;)

Quoting Deus "Big D." Otiosus I would say impressive, but your builds are starting to get repetitive. Not bad, of course, but repetitive. I can objectively say this is a good MOC, but I do not believe I could say it is interesting or new. You might consider going all the way out of your comfort zone and try at least a different style of castle building.
I know what you mean. I decided to stick with this idea because I've been wanting to do it for a while, but I've been using this same house design, and general layout (although this one is a bit different) for a lot of builds lately. I have plans for some new stuff in the future though - some pirates stuff (since now I can post out-of-era builds in LOM due to the Seer rank), as well as various new styles/types of castle builds. :)

Thanks! There's a 2x10 plate+ tile structure underneath the dock that keeps it in place; it's just balanced on top of that. So it's technically not connected, but it still stays in place ok.
