Well I finally got all my Spectral Knights finished, yet the camera has revealed certain points on the figures and their weapons where the paint has peeled and will require a few more dabs here and there. But in any case, they are all finished.
I'll admit, some of the back printing didn't quite match the colour of the chest armour and the paint I picked out did not match what was on their lid.
Also special thanks to Parallel1980 at Deviantart.com for allowing the use of their drawings to make the Power Staff Totems.
As I've explained already, the Visionaries was a failed late 1980s Hasbro toy line that had a TV series of thirteen episodes commissioned to promote the toy line. The series is set on the planet Prismos who's technological advanced civilization reverts to a feudal medivel society after all advance technology ceases to function following a cataclysm. Magic returns to the land and a Wizard named Merklin rewards any knight who can reach his shrine at the top of a mountain with magical powers. The knights who do form two opposing sides and are each given a magical animal totem that they can assume the form of. While some are given additional magic in the form of power staffs, others learn they can restart vehicles. These powers would require an incantation to invoke them
There was also a short lived comic book series that got axed after six issues while it was in the middle of the story arc. The comic series had some significant changes to the animation series. One being was in the animation, the Power Staffs had limited use and had to be taken back to Merklin's shrine to be recharged, yet in the comic series their power was unlimited.
The Spectral Knights are the protagonist lot who consist of seven members. They are distinguished from the antagonist lot; the Darkling Lords by bearing silver weapons, chest plates and silver Power Staffs. Plus their animal forms and Power Staff manifestations were blue.
From left to right in the image, their names and capabilities are listed below.
Leoric is the leader, and being that he has to basically be the brave and honourable guy. He is also the only Spectral Knight to have any facial hair He gains the animal totem of the Lion for his bravery in confronting a stone golem, and is given the Power of Wisdom where he can summon a character called the Owl of Wisdom to give him the Dungeon Master (Dungeons and Dragons... anyone remember that series) hint for the day.
His incantation to summon this goes “Whispered secrets of a shattered age. I summon you, renew this sage!”
Arzon was the optimistic and impetuous one. He gains the totem of the eagle and is given the Power of Wisdom where he can summon a know-it-all character called the Bearer of Knowledge. In the comic series his staff would instead just implant the knowledge in his head.
His incantation went “A whim, a thought, and more is sort. Awake thy my mind, thy will be wrought!”
Witterquick is sort of the athlete of the group and the one willing to bend the rules. He gains the animal totem of the cheetah and the power of speed. In the series, when invoking his power staff, he would summon a sort of deity who would instantly spirit him away to whatever destination he. In the comic however, his staff would instead turn him in to the Flash.
His incantation went. “Sheave these feet in the driving gale, make swift these legs, on land I sail!”
Cryotek is the oldest and strongest of the Spectral Knights. He gains the totem of the bear for his strength and endurability, and is given the Power of Strength, which is summoning a blue archer who fires off an explosive arrow. In the comic his Power Staff instead just gave him super strength or it could project an energy wave. Despite being the tough guy, he has skill in sewing and cooking. The show and comic also showed him to be in a sort of relationship with Galadria.
His incantation went "Three suns aligned pour forth their light and fill the archer's bow with might!”
Galadria was the only female member of the Spectral Knights, and had no original Hasbro figure release. She possessed the totem of the Dolphin. She had no additional power like the men did, but was hinted that she could operate a vehicle and was even seen in one episode performing maintenance on one. The show and comic also showed him to be in a sort of relationship with Cryotek.
In the comics she did possess a a Power Shield which had the power of Healing.
Incantation went "By warmth of heart, your pain I feel. Grant me the power, your wounds to heal!"
Ectar is the head of security of Leoric's kingdom and was originally a cop during the age of science. He gains the totem of the fox for his cunning and ability to sense a trap, but possess no Power Staff. Instead he can operate a vehicle called the Lancer Cycle and can use magic to project energy bolts from its canopy. In the comic however it was said to hold the power of protection.
Incantation (never used in the show or comics) "Shield this craft from one and all. Reflect, deflect, depose and fall!"
Ferral is the youngest member of the Spectral Knights. He possess the totem of the wolf for his keen tracking senses. He does possess a Power Staff, but does mann the Spectral Knights primary vehicle; the Capture Chariot that can use magic to propel fire bolts.
Incantation (never used in the show or comic series) “Draw upon the breath of stars, And scorch the skies with fiery scars!"
