For those of you who haven't read the book recently (and I'm included in that group by the way) this chapter is a bit different than the movie. Frodo, Sam, and Pippin are traveling together from Bag End to a house he purchased on the eastern edge of the Shire in Buckland. This is a ruse, as he intends to continue on to Rivendell with Sam. Frodo is aware that a ring wraith is on his tail, so he's being cautious and convinces the party to head off-road into the woods for a shortcut. Pippin warns them the terrain is tough off-road but Frodo carries the argument. They descend down a green hill into the trees and immediately are faced by thick undergrowth. To make matters worse they run into a swift running stream with steep banks, bordered by thorns. At that moment Sam looks back and sees a terrifying black figure on the ridge of the road staring down into the woods after them.
That's my scene!

Now a few more shots of the whole build:

A few close ups of the hobbits:

And some mushrooms! Had to toss in a few even though they aren't featured until later in the chapter.

The stream:

More shots of the black rider, some artsy ones, a friend of mine helped and took some amazing pics!

Top down:

****

So I really enjoyed this build. I tried some neat new stuff including some terrain techniques - the riverbed under the blue tiles, the clear pieces for fast moving water, the hill out of nets (see below). Also both types of trees were new techniques for me. Anywho, I hope you guys like it, and good luck to Lego Beethoven!!

And to close it out, some work in progress shots:

Thanks Evan! I have to hand it to Tolkien for giving me so many helpful details to design to :)

Quoting Kevin Moyer Due to your polished and realistic landscaping, you get my vote. In the future, though, I would avoid purple trees outside of Mirkwood. :) It feels slightly out of place here.
Thank you so much for the vote! And agreed on the purple, I may have ordered a few more green leaves on bricklink already ;)

Quoting Andrew JN Nice build! Cool idea with using the net for creating the slope of the hill, I think that turned out great! While I think the purple doesn't quite fit, the trees themselves are quite good as is the stream.
Thanks Andrew!

Quoting Hildigrim Took Great work, both of you! I really like what you guys did in this round, both of you have pretty strong builds. LB, I like the dock, the rock work and the wagon, They're all very nice! I feel in some spots the color mixing seems a bit messy and somethings seems unfinished but the overall MOC is quite nice! In your build, D H, I like the way the slope seems to rune right into the valley and the bank, border and foliage are all really nice looking! The purple seems a bit out of place but that might just be me. In the end, my vote goes to D H. Both of you really captured the category and I can't wait to see what you have in store for us in the near future! Good luck with the other judges!
Thanks so much hildigrim! I have to admit I ran out of green leaves after the first two trees, but the forest seemed too thin and I added a fatter third tree and purple was all that was available haha.
