MELO R3: DH vs Kingdomview Bricks
Category: The King of the Golden Hall
About this creation
MELO 2016: Round 3
Bracket: Barad-Dur
Judges: Mark Murphy, Kevin Moyer, and Hildigrim Took
My excellent opponent: Kingdomview Bricks

For this category I chose to build Meduseld, King Theoden of Rohan's golden hall in the capital city of Edoras. Specifically I portrayed the moment from the movies where Eowyn stands in front of the hall looking off into the distance in distress.

Poor Eowyn.

A soldier of Rohan.

Decorative woodwoork.

Horse heads, redid em a few times, meh?

From above.

Sideways, you can see how skinny the false front is haha.

Arches and benches.

Wood panels.

Door and entry tiling.

The innards! Kinda fun doing a false front for the first time.

The well.

Rocks and stuff.

The soldier again... but from a different angle! Focus blurry on background for cool effect :)

I made the green arch lining for my first attempt at the main arches, but had to change it up, I think it looks pretty neat as the doorway instead.

Top down.

****************

I was very excited to be assigned to this category as Meduseld is one of my favorite settings from the whole series. Eowyn is also one of my favorite characters so I decided she'd be the featured minifig, but you may note that in the book you don't actually meet her until after Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli are admitted into the hall.
Frankly, I was intimidated by the idea of building such an iconic setting, but I had to give it a go. I originally intended to build a larger portion of the hall but time and parts limitations kept the scope as is. I should note that being out of town for four days in the middle of the round was pretty stressful haha.
Couldn't quite get the lighting to cooperate even with editing for the main pic, so sorry bout that. I need a better setup!
I hope you all enjoy, and good luck to you Kingdomview Bricks in your build as well!

And now for a few work in progress pics to finish off the post:

Quoting Jack Sparrow This is sweet! I love the "decorative woodwork" and the horse-heads. Those looked like a tricky build!
Thanks Jack! Appreciate it, yeah it took a while to settle on the design of all the woodwork. The pillars especially gave me trouble as I started with larger ones.

Quoting Kevin Moyer This was hard to decide. I really like the floor and the mosaic in your opponent's entry, but, due to your fantastic (and accurate) architectural detailing, you have my vote. Definitely one of the best versions of Meduseld I've seen.
Thanks so much Kevin!

Quoting Hildigrim Took Oh my gosh! This is extremely hard to judge... I keep going back and forth... I love Kingdomviews attention to detail, especially with the minifigs (Gandalf taking off his gray cloak, Grima and Eowyn)... KVB also included a very nice mosaic of a Rider's horse, though it seems just a tad bit gappy... Doug's build is also fantastic and he pulled off a very accurate Rohan look despite not using any of the actual figures. Another thing that impressed me was all the detail on the walls/pillars, it can be very easy to make just a straight up and down brown wall. But the way you layered it is very nice! All that to say. I'm still not sure who's going to win but D H has my vote... Good luck with the rest of the judges, both of you! This was very hard to judge...
Really appreciate the kind words Hildigrim!

Ah crud, forgot to mention this in the description (which I think I'm not supposed to change now that I submitted my entry) but everyone who likes Meduseld should also check out the version done by The Dunedain98. That MOC is crazy good.
