Barad-Dur Bracket
My opponent's wonderful entry.
For Round 3 of the 2016 Middle Earth Lego Olympics .

Category: The King of the Golden Hall

"Thus Gandalf softly sang, and then suddenly he changed. Casting his tattered cloak aside, he stood up and leaned no longer on his staff: and he spoke in a cold clear voice.
'The wise speak only of what they know, Gríma son of Gámód. A witless worm you have become. Therefore be silent, and keep your forked tongue behind your teeth. I have not passed through fire and death to bandy crooked words with a serving-man till the lightning falls.' "
-The Lord of the Rings, Book Three, Chapter VI, By J.R.R. Tolkien

Builder's Notes:

I chose to do the interior of the Golden Hall, partly because I love this scene in the book, and also because of many fantastic versions of the exterior of the hall have already been done.
This build includes my first LEGO mosaics, which I included to capture some of the details described in the book, and to add interesting complexity. Another interesting fact about this build is that it has no standard studs up construction whatsoever.

This scene is based entirely on the book. I included as many details as possible to make it accurate, such as the tapestry of Eorl the Young riding to battle, and the multicolored stone floor. Since the book mentions runes in the floor, I put light gray runes which spell "Meduseld" (the name of the hall) down the center of the floor. (If you don't believe me, I'll take a better shot of the floor and you can look it up in Appendix F.) Other details should be self-explanatory.

References from the chapter:
The floor: "As their eyes changed, the travelers perceived that the floor was paved with stones of many hues; branching runes and strange devices intertwined beneath their feet."

The tapestry: "Many woven cloths were hung upon the walls, and over their wide spaces marched figures of ancient legend, some dim with years, some darkling in the shade. But upon one form the sunlight fell: a young man upon a white horse. He was blowing a great horn and his yellow hair was flying in the wind."

There's lots more, but you should just go read the chapter. It's one of my favorites. (Though that might be because I was just reading it. :-)

Man, this is beautiful. MELO this year has been amazing to sit back and watch, so many great entries and this has to be one of my favorites. I LOVE the color scene, flooring, mosaic (gappy but still amazing), minifigs, and man, this is just perfect. I think I'd have easily given you my vote because I just LOVE this interior, oh man this is great. Like I said, this is one of my favorite entries for MELO so far, and it's really a shame you didn't make it to the next round. However, there is no shame in losing with an amazing build. Great build all around!

Thanks for the compliments and analysis. I'm disappointed but I see what you mean.
Quoting Andrew JN Awesome hall! The mosiac is really good especially it being your first. Cool addition with the runes in light-bley.
Thank you! That's great to hear from a MELO champion.

Thank you for all the compliments and encouragement. I'm glad you liked it. I'm disappointed to be out, but there is always next year, and plenty of other building to be done. Till then I'll be sitting back and watching the show with you.

This was hard to decide. I really like the floor and the mosaic in your entry. That floor technique is very easy to do badly, but yours looks quite nice. And that mosaic is just great. However, due to your opponent's fantastic (and accurate) architectural detailing, he has my vote.

Oh my gosh! This is extremely hard to judge... I keep going back and forth... I love Kingdomviews attention to detail, especially with the minifigs (Gandalf taking off his gray cloak, Grima and Eowyn)... KVB also included a very nice mosaic of a Rider's horse, though it seems just a tad bit gappy... Doug's build is also fantastic and he pulled off a very accurate Rohan look despite not using any of the actual figures. Another thing that impressed me was all the detail on the walls/pillars, it can be very easy to make just a straight up and down brown wall. But the way you layered it is very nice! All that to say. I'm still not sure who's going to win but D H has my vote... Good luck with the rest of the judges, both of you! This was very hard to judge...
