2016 VLUG Putt Putt Display: Wrath of Vaal !
About this creation
For those of you not familiar with Star Trek the Original Series, this build is based on The Apple (Episode 9, Season 2).

Kirk, Spock, Bones and the others land on a planet resembling the Garden of Eden. Unfortunately, the planet is controlled by an artificial intelligence known as Vaal which traps the landing party and almost destroys the Enterprise.

So when a Miniland Putt Putt golf course was chosen as this year's VLUG build, naturally, Kirk putting into a giant Vaal immediately sprung to mind.

The natives of Gamma Trianguli serve as the hosts...

Offering food...

And tending bar.

"Make that a double, my good man."

There were multiple casualties on this episode. Sorry, Red Shirt guy.
"He's dead, Jim."

A few shots of the display before it shipped.

Kirk putts into the mouth, then the ball goes through a shoot to the green on the upper left corner of the layout. Par two.

WIP pic, reference photo in the background.

In the last couple of months before Brickworld, it was looking like we might be coming up a little short, with only 14 holes. My son the golfer thought that to be unacceptable, so I came up with what I call the Four Season's of VLUG.

Another awesome trip to Brickworld! We had a great time at the con, hanging out with friends, old and new. We even got to attend the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. That Chris Phipson sure is a hoot! Congrats to the others in the group for being nominated for Best Collaborative Display! Congrats to Eurobricks for the win, too! And thanks to Dave Kaleta, this year's HMFIC!

Check out the Bricknerd write up!

We're already looking forward to next year!!!

Thanks! Funny how these midi-figs can convey so much attitude, even from a Vulcan.

Quoting Clayton Marchetti Holy smokes this is totally brilliant! I don't know where to start.....ok first off spokes ears are amazing. I can't believe Kirk would be playing mini golf with all the lovely ladies around ha ha! And that red shirt I think that might be Scotty suffering from a wee bit of shore leave :-) I absolutely love your theme it's a real masterpiece!
Thanks, Clayton! Kirk was out to impress the ladies, for sure!

Quoting Marty Fields Fantastic build! Yes, if you ever wondered what became of the inhabitants after Vaal was destroyed, now you know; they turned the planet into a Risa complete with Crazy Golf. You would have thought they would have removed the dead redshirt, though! Always though Kirk was out-of-order destroying Vaal, a (generally) benevolent computer who cared for the natives for centuries, controlling the weather and keeping them free of disease. Goodness knows what they will now contract from all those visitors from the Federation. Love it.
Rodenberry hadn't worked out the details of the Prime Directive quite yet. But I think the natives were about to find out how much fun they could have. Thanks for the comment!

Quoting Mark Kelso Loved the concept on this as soon as I saw it, Bart! The execution is brilliant, as well. What I didn't realize, was that you had done the additional four seasons. Great job on an 11th hour save! Having played quite a bit of golf, myself, anything shy of 18 definitely would have been a bit of a rub. Well done!
That's what my son said. I was pleased with how they turned out, even thought they were only one baseplate each. It was also an excuse to build some more figs. Hey, if you've got time to play golf, you better make time to get your arse to BW next year, Dude! Thanks, Mark!

Quoting Dennis Price As always, it was great seeing you and the rest of our ragged band of misfits! I know it's Vaal, but still like to think of him as a Gorn because, well, the Gorns were cool. Great job on all your contributions this year -- but to reiterate: Scotty was one tough dude. He wore the red shirt and kicked butt!
Aye, Laddy, that he did! Great to see you, too, my friend! Although it would have been nice to have more of a crowd at the collab. Gorns were awesome!

These are wonderful. I like the Star Trek build, especially the dragon's head but I love the theme of the four seasons, with a different one for each letter of VLUG. I especially like the absurdity of winter, as I imagine that the snow would stop the balls from rolling anywhere at all. That said, Verbier, where I work in Switzerland has a snow golf course in the winter.

Quoting Tim C I thought this part of the build was the highlight of the collab, Bart. Two years ago, I thought Olympus was the highlight of the Odyssey collab. Yeah, you're alright;) Nice touch with the VLUG holes. It was a pleasure seeing you again, and having the opportunity to meet the fam. Not making any commitments at this point, but I hope to see you next year! Maybe I'll bring my own LEGO cup so I can have some dark tan flavored wineXD
Thanks, Tim! It means a lot, and thanks again for joining up with the Colonial Fleet! It was great to see you again and meet your lovely wife. I can't believe we have the same name! ; ) I suppose that's what dark tan flavored wine does to one's brain. Till next year!

Whacky is right. It works pretty well with a technic ball, although they tend to not roll straight. There's a video on Flickr.
