Dragon's Head Bust
"A Dragon! A Dragon!"..."Would someone please stop this man from yelling dragon?"
About this creation

In honor of my new group Forgotten Gems, my Dragon's Head Bust has gotten a new set of pictures finally. (Good thing he's still sitting around on my shelf after all this time!) I've included some of his jaw mechanism this time, as well as pictures that don't have all the "garbage" in the background so it'll be easier to focus on him.

Last winter I built a good portion of a dragon head, intending to continue on and make more at some point. A few weeks ago I finally finished it up and did the neck and base to create this bust. The jaw works, with the teeth and flames nesting which allows it to fully close). The entire piece stands about nine inches high. I'm rather pleased with it, and it's among the most directly artistic pieces I've done and one of the few sculptural styles. It is, in my opinion, a piece that is good enough to make regular trips to shows with me. It's small and easy to transport to, so it can go farther afield than can something like The Temple of Hephaestus.

Like all of my creations to date, this is straight out of my head free form. I'd estimate a total of 20 hours went into it including one complete breakdown of the first rendition of the head. It is very loosely based on Gorbash from The Flight of Dragons.

Quoting Bacon Tomato O.K. I ran a search for "dragon" and checked the first half of the results. Then, I checked a few things linked to the results. This was roughly 1144 MOCs in all. None of them offered a dragon bust as good as this. Can someone please check the latter half of the results for me?
I suspect I'd be biased if I looked. Busts are quite infrequent, particularly with fantastical creatures. Full dragons obviously less so, though most are of smaller scale more to the proportions of a mini-figure. A few people have done epic large full bodied dragons, and I wish I could. Alas, unless someone wants to fund me, it's probably not going to happen.

Nice sculpting, James! Imagine having a working version on the kitchen counter -- you could roast yourself a marshmallow anytime you like!
