I seriously like the recent Lego city polar series: well now, it became even more serious
About this creation
On seriously cool series of the last years, in my opinion, is the Lego City polar series. I really enjoy set 60035, as an example.
Well, now, here is a little larger example, in full trial truck livery. I present you a 2016 Mercedes Actros 8*8 polar version.
God I love those chunky wheels. Designed, as allways in scale, but with full trial truck capabilities, the vehicle became much to high. Solution indeed : BIGGER tires.
I already had a quite good trial truck drive train design, and I knew it would become an Actros, but then Lego came with 42043... sigh... About one year later:
No sweat, this is my interpretation...
Technical details : 5 motors, of wich 2 XL:
The XL are for moving, one for the front, one for the rear, indepently.
Front and rear drivetrain don't have a differential between first and second axle, but do have them between left and right.
One motor for operating a simple high-low gearing. Well, as front and rear move independently, actually two gearboxes...
One motor for the steering, of course with ackermann. Motor is mounted on the front drivetrain.
One motor to lock the rear differentials (front allways stays open).
Axles are pendular, but drivetrain itself have a up-down capability. It should operate like all wheels are indepently sprung. (+ - 2 brick travel)
Suspension is like "leave spring", and actually 2 flex rods operate them. Proven succes...
Cabin : my interpretation of an 2016 Actros. kept it as generic as possible, as is the interior.
Doors do open...
Engine. V8, off course, but mounted way too high, chassis and suspension were priority.
