In 1999 a strange magnetic anomaly designated TMA-1 was detected in Tycho crater, near the Moon's south pole. In 2001, Dr. Heywood Floyd accompanied a team of scientists to visit the site, where an ancient artifact of unknown origin had been excavated.
About this creation
The Moonbus (referred to in the film as a "rocket bus") is 12.3m long, 4.9m wide, and 3.4m tall (plus antenna). I've built this version somewhat larger to capture the look better.
The roof lifts off easily.
Crew access is through a pressure door at the rear.
A descent ramp is stowed underneath for surface embarkation.
Departing from Clavius Base, the Moonbus uses a ballistic trajectory to conserve fuel and to reduce agitation of the regolith.
Returning to the base as the sun rises. The artifact, which had emitted a powerful radio signal towards Jupiter, had been buried for over 3 million years. It was later realized that the object was purposely left underground where only an advanced civilization, capable of rudimentary space travel, would one day uncover it. Although kept secret, word eventually spread and the people of Earth waited for something – anything – to happen.
