Scaler XL
Bada boom! Today is my sixth MOCciversary, and to celebrate, I've revamped my Hero Factory Self MOC, originally designed for RaptorTalon's HF Self MOC contest! Stay tuned, because some important news about Contenders Book 3 is also coming!
About this creation
“If I’ve learned anything recently, it’s not to give up, no matter how dire things seem.”
-Scaler, The Contenders #30

Cliff Scaler:
Cliff Scaler is a Hero working for the Hero Factory. This hero has had a variety of different forms, though soon he became known as a heavy brawler, having a combat philosophy of striking suddenly and striking hard. The entirety of his left arm has been retooled into a bulky plasma cannon, able to knock even the strongest villain off their feet. Despite having such a visually loud design, Scaler is very quiet; he only really talks to those he knows well; these people will recognise him for his dry humour and jovial charm. He is intellectually quite resilient, failing to lose hope even in the most miserable of situations.

Scaler was originally built in the Hero Factory Assembly Tower to showcase the new 2.0 build. However, the designers found him too clunky and awkward for the showcase, and so worked to perfect the look with Evo and Nex. He did little in the first few months of his existence until he met Jenna Arrowhead, who he befriended. Arrowhead, already a prestigious Hero at the time, assigned him to her team. Cliff, along with his new team, was sent to Tanker Station 22 to help the Alpha Team battle Firelord’s gang. Arrowhead’s team also received the 3.0 upgrade, and were sent to Quatros to help battle Witch Doctor, but were called back to base before they could properly contribute. It was here that they lost one of their team members, Joey Tumbler.

Cliff’s greatest challenge was during the Villain Breakout, when he was assigned to capture the cat burglar Depravitie. His bulky form was substituted for a slimmer one and he was given a pair of roller-skates. He found Depravitie in Antropolis city, who tried to escape him on a stolen motorbike. He caught up with her on his roller-skates and jammed his blade into the wheels, destroying them. This was very controversial, as this in itself was a criminal act. She was captured, but a lawsuit was filed against the Hero Factory by the bike’s original owner. Despite winning this, the Hero Factory still compensated the civilian for the damages to their bike.

He played minor parts in both the Brain Attack and the invasion of Antropolis City, doing mostly groundwork for both, in addition to taking out the Simiasaur in the former event and the Mutation Beast in the latter, piloting the Brawl Machine. All was peaceful until a couple of years later, while the team was guarding a cellblock full of villains. A criminal named Dread infiltrated the block and broke out three villains. Dread then told the heroes that his next target was Mary Windbird, a Hero of some prestige, and then set off in a ship. Scaler, Arrowhead and Sanah Torch followed Dread’s gang to the planet Racta Magna, where they found Windbird and warned her of the threat to come. The following day, Dread appeared at the city of Racta Major and demanded that Windbird be handed over; the city’s defenders, the Contenders, refused.

Dread orchestrated a siege on the city, in which Scaler helped defend against. Though the heroes were beaten, Dread was unable to capture Windbird; he did however complicate matters when he revealed that Windbird was responsible for the destruction of his species, the Gomorrans. While this caused vicious argument, they still resolved to help Windbird. Scaler set out to find Dread with a member of the city, Toa Krode. Instead they encountered Depravitie, who had returned and now allied with Dread. She defeated them, though this did not break their resolve. The heroes fought Dread’s gang once again, this time losing a one of Windbird’s closest friends; it did not take long for them to take off for revenge. In this last battle, the villains were killed, but at the cost of Windbird’s life. Scaler and the other Heroes returned to Makuhero City to bury the dead.

The heroes spent the year campaigning for the Gomorran Genocide to be recognised, even upgrading to XL form to publicise their cause. However, they were soon summoned back to Racta Magna following a distress call from Toa Galia of the Contenders; their planet had been taken over by villains known as the Shadebringers, casting the rock into perpetual night. Scaler and the others arrived on the planet, meeting up with Toa Raxonax and a group of others who had not yet been imprisoned. They formed a collective known as the Champions of Day and set out to win back the city of Racta Major. They fought their way to the city entrance and set up camp.

Scaler is currently on Racta Magna, helping the Contenders to retake their city.

BOOM! Main job of the day here was just up scaling him to XL size, while refining his look a tad. I ditched the wings, as they don't really suit a bulky character like this guy, and I took out all the silver on him. For the most part, I'm pretty happy with how he turned out.

The back.

Hey! He's still got his Data Pad!

Here he is with Daniel Stinger, the MOC I shamelessly ripped off with the whole Data Pad thing- thanks Daniel H.!

He's even got a tiny little shield on his forearm to repel bullets! The least iconic thing about Scaler has been preserved!

Height comparison with Tahu, Uniter of Fire!

Krode and Scaler: a duo to be dreaded!

With his arch nemesis, Depravitie.

All my Hero Factory Heroes together!

My... three Self MOCs, I guess... First there's Raxonax, my Bionicle Self MOC; then there's Scaler, my HF Self MOC; the little guy in the middle is Fotoh the Unchallenged, my avatar for The Island RPG, which I guess is a Self MOC in many respects. HAPPY MOCCIVERSARY TO ME BY THE WAY!

That's all folks!

...or is it?

2017 for Racta Magna is going to be like 2016 was to us!

Prepare yourselves people, because on the 20th of January, the grand finale to not only the Contenders, but the story of Racta Magna itself, will commence.

On the 20th of January, The Contenders Book 3: The Darkest Night, shall begin!

As with last year and the year before, here are the issue lists:

Book 3: The Darkest Night:

#35: Resurrection
#36: Life and Death
#37: Shadebringers
#38: The Fractured Mind
#39: Theatre of Cruelty

#41: Corpse-Maker
#42: The Wandering Toa
#43: Champions of Day
#44: Gluttony of the Conqueror
#45: The Degenerate
#46: Breakthrough
#47: The Battle of Racta Major
#48: Above I
#49: Peace of Mind

The names for issues 43-49 are not yet finalised, and so they may not be the actual titles when they come out. Just a little heads up.

Also, there will be a Contenders #50. I wouldn't do that to you guys (or myself).

Prepare your toilet seats, because things are gonna get... dark...

UPDATE 30/12/16:

This update is incredibly minor- in fact, you might not even notice it. I'll take off the chest piece so you can see:

See those four perpendicular axel/pinhole connector pieces on his armpits? Yeah, I added those: That is literally it. This basically fills in his excessive armpit gap, making the chest look bulkier and more complete. This was suggested by Dark Aeon: Thanks buddy! ^-^

Quoting Sir Flexalot Wait, 6th MOCaversery?! U old :P came back to this for no reason, and noticed this book is Racta Magna's finale? Are you still going to do a story after this book is over?
Uhuh- well, you're the one commenting on a six month old post :P Yes, Contenders Book 3 will indeed be the end of the Racta Magna story. I've been toying with the idea of doing another fumetti, but with a completely different story and characters- I'd have to take a few years break before that however, as these next few years I will be too busy to do consistent comics like I have done before. I'll still be uploading MOCs though, just not story-related ones.

Quoting Dark Aeon First, happy MOCaversary. Second, scaler looks really nice here, although his torso looks a bit too stretched from the front. Just something to slope into the armpit will make it look much better. Last, I look forward to Contenders Season 3! Wait, hang on, I need to go buy a new toilet :P
Thanks Aeon! I'm glad you like Scaler- hmm, yeah, now you mention it, it does look a little odd... I'll see if there are any free receptacles near the armpits. Also, yes. Make sure to bring lots of paper, too. :P

Quoting Blizzard - ... That's it, I'm upscaling Blizzard after Christmas. I NEEDZ BEEG MAWC! Looks absolutely amazing Wertman! I'm quite pleased with myself for indirectly providing you with Fotoh as a self moc of yours XP Don't know why, just makes me happy. Contenders Book Three looks like it'll be very, very, very interesting and I can't wait to read it! As for Scaler, I'll admit I was a bit disappointed by his lack of wings, but I do see why you got rid of them. But something about him seems... off, aesthetically. Just the look of him seems... bland, I guess, for some reason. I don't know why. Might be because I've been looking at things with spikes and flames and giant speakers all over them. Ah well, still looks fantastic regardless, and I can't wait to see what you're going to come up with next! An XL Raxonax probably wouldn't go unnoticed...!
Thanks Blizzard! Yeah, big MOCs are fun when you get 'em right! And yes, I've been really enjoying the Island RPG, and so dear little Fotoh is quite dear to my heart :P Indeed, I think Book 3 will definitely be interesting...! I can see why you'd be disappointed about him losing his wings... it was a big part of his visual design, but I don't think it would have worked in terms of weight... it's probably what looks off to you, too; it would certainly help make him look more dynamic. Thanks Blizzard! -and as for Raxonax XL... I tried that once... that was... something, to say the least... http://www.moc-pages.com/moc.php/281814

Quoting Traykar the swift Heck Yeah! This is legit! You always said Scaler was Bulky brawler type, and I always thought, Meh I guess so", But this really encompasses that idea! I do find the force field to be humorous, due to it's small size, But the cannon takes the cake, that thing is insane! Awesome work Wertman!
Thanks Traykar! I'm glad you like him! Yeah, I guess Scaler's always been just chunky rather than bulky until now; it was never an intentional choice originally, but here it definitely was. And yeah, the little shield was more added to give him some more trans-orange rather than to be an actual sheild. And yeah, I'm very proud of the cannon! ^-^ Thanks again, man!
