This is my Speed Champions Porsche 934.5 race car.
About this creation
The 1977 Porsche 934.5 race car was introduced that year for IMSA road racing competition in the United States. The car combined the 1976 Porsche 934 turbocharged race car used in FIA Group 4 with the prominent rear fender flares and rear wing of the Porsche 935 slant nose race car prepared for FIA Group 5 racing. There were ten 934.5 cars built for the 1977 IMSA racing season and they won 6 of 8 races.
I based this car from my previous Speed Champions Porsches, the 2008 GT3 RS and the 2005 911, along with the outstanding cars built by Petey Bird.
I decided to focus on the massive rear fender flares and the rear wing as my main design elements. To get the exaggerated fender flares, I decided to go 8 studs wide. For the rear wing, I wanted the side elements to be as thin as possible. I used these wings with clips that came from my son's LEGO Star Wars advent calendar along with white LEGO Star Wars light saber blades for the sides. These were mounted using a combination of side studs and headlight bricks.
I closed the side gap on this car that I have on my other two Porsche Speed Champions cars. Here there is a lot of shaping on the sides of the car, so I was okay with the red curved slopes being 1/2 a plate tucked in under the white car sides.
I used two official LEGO stickers on this car, the Porsche windshield banner and the Porsche crest on the hood.
I decided to do the car in red and white because I wanted to use the old school 1970's LEGO window brick that I painted on my GT3 RS for the central intake on the front end. Most of the 934.5 race cars where white, hence the main body color.
Yellow headlights traditionally denote a GT race car at night from the white headlights used on the faster prototype race cars.
I bought (another) Porsche LEGO minifigure to be the race car driver. He fits along with a steering wheel.
I went with the more European orange and red rear lights to break up all the red on the back of the car.
This is the actual car I used for the design. Some of the 934.5 cars were later modified with boxier rear fender flares with large air intakes. This car still retains its original style fenders.
Woow, that's a fantastic looking machine! Really clever to use that oldschool window brick as an air intake on the front. Also the small wings used for the spoiler in the rear look great! Really cool ride!!
