Astrok the Shadebringer
Good day, everyone! Apologies for the delay with this MOC, I just got back from the good ol' city of Amsterdam, and I'm celebrating with the final Shadebringer, the sinister Astrok!
About this creation
“Drink deep or drink not the spring of revenge, child!”
-Astrok to Sohbec, The Contenders #43

Astrok:
Astrok was a lieutenant in the Makuta Sombrak and, in a second life, one of the four Shadebringers; in both cases she served the malevolent Aroxion, whom she deeply resented. In addition to the standard Makuta powers, as a Shadebringer she wielded the usurped flame of Thanatos, which she channelled into two scythes. Astrok was a quiet and enigmatic character, masking intelligence and misanthropy behind a stoic face. She was also endlessly ambitious, willing to kill, maim or torture to reach her diabolical ends; she made no shortage of enemies, and her negligence of this fact was ultimately the cause of her downfall

Astrok in hot pursuit of a Toa. (Contenders #42)

Like all Makuta, Astrok was crafted by Mata Nui to serve under the lead of Makuta Miserix; signs of her villainy were clear from the very beginning, as evidenced by her explicit disdain for Miserix and the grotesque mutants she would craft in her laboratory. Perhaps for that reason she was well respected in the brotherhood, despite her association with a maligned runt named Aroxion- perhaps she saw a future tyrant in him and sought to establish an early bond with him. They quickly became close allies, being among the first to side with Makuta Teridax during the brotherhood revolt. Even when an unpopular Aroxion was chased out of the organisation, Astrok followed him, along with a few other zealots; this small group formed the Makuta Sombrak, with Aroxion at the helm and Astrok as his second-in command.

Second-in-command to Makuta Aroxion. (Hunt for “God” #12)

The Sombrak eventually arrived on a lonely planet named Racta Manga and attempted to conquer it; they were naturally opposed, specifically by a group known as the Toa Racta. This culminated in a long war, dubbed the ‘Days of Shadowed Magna’, which ended in Aroxion’s defeat at the hands of a Toa of Light. Despite such a humiliating defeat, the Sombrak attempted multiple times to annex the planet, all of which ending in failure. Meanwhile, Astrok lent her services to a Faux-Toa named Shadonax, who needed help defeating his arch rival, Toa Raxonax. Despite this eventually petering out and going nowhere, Astrok managed to form an indefinite allegiance with Shadonax, all the while aiding Aroxion in his boundless dream of conquest.

Fighting the Toa Racta. (Hunt for “God” #18)

Aroxion’s hubris would grow to such an extent that he would even challenge Thanatos, the god of death. The two clashed vehemently while Astrok reluctantly supported her master, despite her thinking that the fight was pointless. But servitude won her only death, as she was absorbed by Aroxion; despite being cannibalized, her added power still could not win him the fight. Years passed and Aroxion also died, victim to his own ambition; more years passed and Shadonax acquired the power of resurrection. In an act of nihilistic boredom, he resurrected both Aroxion and Astrok, and as a trio they conquered the planet. When Astrok first saw her old master, she furiously attempted to kill him, only to be stopped by Shadonax, who forced the two to get along.

Shadonax and his Shadebringers. (Contenders #37)

This trio, along with another named Sohbec, formed the Shadebringers, the monarchs of Racta Magna. Despite agreeing to coexist with Aroxion, she inevitably began plotting his downfall. She started by allying with an old creation of hers, the birdlike Catcher; she mutated the Dark Hunter ‘Slave Driver’ into her brutish pet, and painfully merged two Gostok children, members of a dying species, into the Beastly Gostok. These servants were first used to fight off a new Toa Team, the Contenders, who attempted to win back their planet; she would next send them to chase down Toa Raxonax, who escaped in the chaos. While setting up a lookout for the Toa, she spoke with Shadebringer Sohbec, who joined her in planning the coup against Aroxion.

Collusion with Shadebringer Sohbec. (Contenders #45)

Astrok also spoke briefly with Shadonax, riling him against Aroxion before returning to the lookout to greet Raxonax, who had come back with an army of rebels named the Champions of Day. Astrok and her minions tried to fight them off, aided by Sohbec and a few Shadebringer allies, only to be chased back into the citadel, Racta Major. Astrok sought to let the attackers in, hoping that they would distract Aroxion enough that the three Shadebringers could strike him down; however, both Shadonax and Sohbec would abandon her, ruining her plan. As a plan-b, she aided the Contenders in trapping Aroxion in an elemental barrage, hoping it would kill him. This unfortunately only boosted his power, causing an injured and terrified Astrok to run off.

An injured Astrok in her final fight. (Contenders #48)

The Makuta ran to the highest balcony, only to be found by a Gostok named Gellesyl, the vengeful mother of the two children she had mutated. Astrok tried to fight her off but was defeated and kicked over the ledge of a five-story tower, falling to her final death.

Much of this MOC has already been shown off in the last issue of Contenders, so this is more of a formality than anything else.

Those of you who have seen the original will note the biggest change made to her aesthetic; the silver and red colour scheme, as opposed to the black and silver of yore.

The back. With both Astrok and Aroxion, I felt that the original designs were very generic, as far as Makuta go (they were some of my first villains, so they were understandably very derivative), so I wanted to change them up and make them more interesting, while retaining the original features that made them recognisable (the generic head designs on both, for instance).

With Aroxion I scaled him up in size and messed around with his proportions a bit, and with Astrok I changed her colour scheme to something a little more vibrant, while maintaining the dark and lifeless palette of the Makuta.

I absolutely love these scythes- I'm really proud of them, and I think they make fitting weapons for someone of Astrok's svelte yet powerful silhouette.

Compared with Korgot, the protector of Earth. While she's not as tall as Aroxion, she's still pretty tall, even for a 'titan'.

Haha, yes- it's a very simple foot design, but I really like it- so much so that I used it twice!

Stood with the Guardian of the Gate- again, she might look small with how slim she is, but she's still got quite a bit of height on her.

All my larger MOCs- I'm running out of space in the frame for all of these guys and gals!

And that's it! Three issues in, and finally we have our main villains for Book 3 revealed!

I'm running out of MOCs to post, too! :P Hopefully I can coast with what I have left until may, when I can finally get back to my pieces and build some more!

But for now, that's all! Happy Sunday!

Quoting joshua jacobson Wow! now things already gotten more impressive with your creations... how goes the bionicle mummy moc and the request video of tyranca and sobek coming along? status of the outpost 31 of john carpenters the thing lego creation is apperantly on hold but still in progress, plus i then started creating bionicle creation based on the thing, or yet the ice block thing... yet its a bit more animal but it might looks a bit dark but im sure it might work.
Thanks Joshua! Well, like your Outpost 31 MOC, I'm currently on hold with both things- I'm currently working on a non-Bionicle related, time sensitive project, so I'm only going to be able to work on those projects at around Easter. The Bionicle Thing MOC sounds cool, can't wait to see it!

Quoting Dark Aeon Very nice. I quite like her skinniness, though the exposed technic on the sides of her torso irks me, but I can live with that. I also feel that the neck looks a bit too long, maybe bending the middle joint just slightly to lower the head somewhat would make it look better. I guess that the Jankori is no longer the biggest fish in the sea. Eh, geddit?...I'll see myself out.
Thanks Aeon! I'm glad you like the slimmness, it was something I wanted to emphasise here. I can see why the Technic bits on the side bug you, but I believe they are integral to the structure- I'll see if there's a way I can workshop that at all. As for the neck, I was trying to make it especially long, in order to add to the height and make her look bizarre and stretched-out, though perhaps I either went too far or not far enough with it- it'll be something I'll have to experiment with. WHUH-HEY! :P Thanks again Aeon!

Quoting High Emperor Duckie This is AWESOME! I was NOT expecting that height! I hope you get more positive feedback on this to make up for Aroxion's sore first impression!
Thanks Duckie! Yes, and it's kinda hard to determine height when the frame isn't straight, like in Contenders most of the time. I don't feel too bad about the Aroxion thing, in all honesty- feedback is good, and I'm already plotting out a new version of him for a later date!

Quoting Wondering Person I adore Astrok. Period. This is an amazing moc, I love the height yet slimness to her physique. The only thing I want to point out is a glaring difference between this and the original Astrok, which is that the original had..uh..Nuva design. And this doesn't have ANYTHING period. Or those fabulous clawed feet. But it's still excellent, nonetheless.
Thanks man, glad you like it! Yes, she is quite flat-chested- the HF shells were meant to serve as breasts in that regard, though perhaps they work better on a smaller character like Dukrina. I don't think it's a huge problem, however- not everyone can have the curves of a super-model. Also, I do feel that it complements the skinniness, which I wanted to especially emphasise here.
