My second attempt at making a 6 wide LEGO car. It has opening doors, trunk, and hood with a detailed engine and the ability to seat two Minifigures side by side. It took almost a full rebuild, but I finally came up with a design that made double headlights look right too!
About this creation
About the car:
I am really happy with how this car came out; it looks and functions almost identically to its 8 wide brother. I even managed to get duel headlights in it in the first rebuild, and tailpipes during the second partial rebuild. The smaller engine I designed is probably better than a few of the ones in my 8 wides, and there is a good amount of trunk room too.
There are two parts I am not that happy with though. First is the front design, the double headlights are amazing, but I am not completely satisfied with the grill and bumper. The bumper is small enough it probably can’t be improved, as LEGO just doesn’t make parts small enough. I spent several hours fiddling around with grill designs, and this was the best I could come up with. There were one or two designs that looked slightly better, but I couldn’t get them to fit in with the rest of it.
The original version:
The MK II:
A little bit of Meta humor here. Driving is my current sig-fig, with my old sig-fig in the passenger seat.
As you can see, getting the front to look right is quite complicated. The bumper is the only part that is actually attached; the rest is just wedged in between the frame, bumper, and fenders.
I am still warming up to this whole building 6 wide thing. While they do work better for group displays, I miss the detail and playability my 8 wides have. I am happy I managed to fit two figs side by side in this one, but there is no room for a rear seat, so it only fits two figs compared to the four of the 8 wide. I have also come to realize that the Minifigs may look better standing next to a 6 wide car, but it looks like a golf cart when they are sitting in it because their heads are so big.
I do plan on continuing to make 6 wide version of my 8 wide cars. This will be time and parts permitting of course, so don’t expect them with any amount of regularity.
Oh yeah and be on the lookout for an amazing new MOC using the technique I used on this one for its headlights. Got a few other MOCs I want to upload first, but trust me, it will be well worth the wait. (Hint: it is a model of my favorite car ever!)
Great work Scott this car is fantastic. I think you are right to say that the engine is one of your better ones. I still think the 8 wide looks a little bit better but this is really well done.
