My awesome opponent.

Category: The Blue Mountains.

Here's my entry for Round 2 of the 2017 Middle-earth Lego Olympics. We got a really interesting category, as not much takes place in or around the Blue Mountains and not much is known about it, so there was lots of room for interpretation.

After playing around with a couple ideas, I settled on a quote from Balin in the first Hobbit movie, An Unexpected Journey, where he asks Thorin, "What news from the meeting in Ered Luin?" Ered Luin is another name for the Blue Mountains, and it is the location where Thror, Thrain, Thorin, and the rest of the dwarves from the Lonely Mountain settled after Smaug conquered Erebor. Geographically, the Blue Mountains are situated along the western coast of Middle-earth. The Grey Havens are located in the place where this mountain range meets the sea.

Anyway, I decided to build that meeting between Thorin and the envoys from the seven kingdoms of the dwarves.

All the best to you, Samuel!

With this picture (and the main photo), I tried to make it look like the light was coming from a shaft in the mountain far above the hall. It's a bit dark, but I think it gives the desired effect and sets the mood.

The hammer and anvil - symbols of Durin at the foot of his statue.

The dwarves attending the meeting. From left to right, Dwarven guard, Thorin, representing the Longbeard clan, the Firebeard representative, two Broadbeam dwarves (native to the Blue Mountains), Ironfist representative, and the envoys from the Stiffbeards, Blacklocks, and Stonefoot clans (from eastern Middle-earth), and the other Dwarven Guard, probably a Broadbeam himself.

Chairs. Sturdy and solid, like dwarves.

I hope you enjoyed my interpretation of the Blue Mountains. If you are interested in seeing a few behind-the-scenes pics, please check out my Wip Journal.

Thank you very much for viewing, and thanks to the judges for their consideration!

~Mark

Quoting The Dunedain98 Excellent build Mark! The details on the walls have to be my favorite part. The pillars and floor design, especially the little mosaic, are also fantastic! Great to see another MOC from you!

Quoting Elio Salsano Hi there, After watching your build and your opponent's build, I decided you will get my vote. It's the overall dwarfish look that won me over (and the hammer and anvil of course.) The more I look at it, the more I am starting to like it better. This was my hardest decision actually, your opponent build a very different build, but also good. Greetz and good luck, Elio
Quoting Mark Murphy You have my vote. Good job as always.
Quoting Jonathan Demers Congratulations! You got my vote.

Quoting Michael Kringe Excellent entry! I love dwarves and where they live, so I was really looking foward to this MOC! I think it's a great idea that you added a represantative of each dwarven clan. Where is the Stonefoot's (the Eastern guy's) beard from, is it a Ninjago set?
Thanks, Michael! It's from the Vitruvius (The LEGO Movie) minifigure.

Quoting Jacob Syrups Very nice! Out of curiosity, did you use the same technique for the pillars as you did on the ones in your Mines of Moria from two years ago?
Yup. This is a modified (improved) version. Slightly different design as well, aesthetically.

So many great details! My favorite is definitely the hammer and the anvil (the symbol of the dwarves, of course), but the chairs, the columns, the statue, and the choice of minifigs are also well done. As for the atmosphere shot (the main picture), it looks particularly cool and the feel is perfect. This is just impressive work all the way around!
